Psalm 3

A Psalm of David, twhen he fled from Absalom his son.

1  O Lord, how many are my foes!

Many are rising against me;

2  many are usaying of my soul,

“There is no salvation for him in God.” Selah1

3  But you, O Lord, are a vshield about me,

my glory, and the wlifter of my head.

4  xI cried yaloud to the Lord,

and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah

5  I zlay down and slept;

I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.

6  I will not be afraid aof many thousands of people

who have set themselves against me all around.

7  Arise, O Lord!

Save me, O my God!

For you strike all my enemies on the cheek;

you break the teeth of the wicked.

8  bSalvation belongs to the Lord;

your blessing be on your people! Selah

Psalm 10

1  wWhy, O Lord, do you stand far away?

Why do you xhide yourself in times of trouble?

2  In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor;

ylet them be caught in the schemes that they have devised.

3  For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul,

and the one zgreedy for gain curses1 and renounces the Lord.

4  In the pride of his face2 the wicked does not seek him;3

all his thoughts are, a“There is no God.”

5  His ways prosper at all times;

your judgments are on high, out of his sight;

as for all his foes, he puffs at them.

6  He says in his heart, “I shall not be moved;

throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity.”

7  bHis mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression;

under his tongue are mischief and iniquity.

8  He sits in ambush in the villages;

cin hiding places he murders the innocent.

His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless;

9  he lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket;

he lurks that he may seize the poor;

he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net.

10  The helpless are crushed, sink down,

and fall by his might.

11  He says in his heart, “God has forgotten,

he has hidden his face, dhe will never see it.”

12  Arise, O Lord; O God, lift up your hand;

eforget not the afflicted.

13  Why does the wicked renounce God

and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”?

14  But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation,

that you may take it into your hands;

to you the helpless commits himself;

fyou have been the helper of the fatherless.

15  Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer;

gcall his wickedness to account till you find none.

16  hThe Lord is king forever and ever;

the nations perish from his land.

17  O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted;

you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear

18  to do ijustice to the fatherless and the joppressed,

kso that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.

Psalm 13

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

1  vHow long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?

How long will you whide your face from me?

2  How long must I take counsel in my soul

and have sorrow in my heart all the day?

How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

3  Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;

xlight up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,

4  lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”

lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.

5  But I have ytrusted in your steadfast love;

my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.

6  I will sing to the Lord,

because he has dealt bountifully with me.

Psalm 17

A Prayer of David.

1  Hear a just cause, O Lord; vattend to my cry!

Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit!

2  From your presence let my wvindication come!

Let your eyes behold the right!

3  You have tried my heart, you have xvisited me by night,

you have tested me, and you will find nothing;

I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.

4  With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips

I have avoided the ways of the violent.

5  yMy steps have held fast to your paths;

my feet have not zslipped.

6  aI call upon you, for you will answer me, O God;

incline your ear to me; hear my words.

7  bWondrously show1 your steadfast love,

O Savior of those who seek refuge

from their adversaries at your right hand.

8  Keep me as cthe apple of your eye;

dhide me in the shadow of your wings,

9  from the wicked who do me violence,

my deadly enemies who surround me.

10  They close their hearts to pity;

with their mouths they speak arrogantly.

11  They have now surrounded our steps;

they set their eyes to cast us to the ground.

12  He is elike a lion eager to tear,

as a young lion lurking in ambush.

13  Arise, O Lord! Confront him, subdue him!

Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword,

14  from men by your hand, O Lord,

from men of the world whose portion is in this life.2

You fill their womb with treasure;3

they are satisfied with children,

and they leave their abundance to their infants.

15  As for me, I shall fbehold your face in righteousness;

when I gawake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness.

Psalm 22

To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.

1  dMy God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

eWhy are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?

2  O my God, I cry by day, fbut you do not answer,

and by night, but I find no rest.

3  Yet you are holy,

enthroned on the praises1 of Israel.

4  In you our fathers trusted;

they trusted, and you delivered them.

5  To you they cried and were rescued;

gin you they trusted and were not put to shame.

6  But I am a worm and not a man,

scorned by mankind and hdespised by the people.

7  All who see me imock me;

they make mouths at me; they jwag their heads;

8  k“He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him;

let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”

9  Yet lyou are he who took me from the womb;

you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.

10  On you was I cast from my birth,

and from my mother’s womb you have been my God.

11  mBe not far from me,

for trouble is near,

and there is nnone to help.

12  Many bulls encompass me;

strong bulls of Bashan surround me;

13  they open wide their mouths at me,

like a ravening and roaring olion.

14  I am poured out like water,

and all my bones are out of joint;

my heart is like wax;

it is melted within my breast;

15  my strength is dried up like a potsherd,

and my tongue sticks to my jaws;

you lay me in the dust of death.

16  For pdogs encompass me;

a company of evildoers encircles me;

they have qpierced my hands and feet2—

17  I can count all my bones—

they stare and gloat over me;

18  rthey divide my garments among them,

and for my clothing they cast lots.

19  But you, O Lord, do not be far off!

O you my help, scome quickly to my aid!

20  Deliver my soul from the sword,

my precious life from the power of the dog!

21  Save me from the mouth of the tlion!

You have rescued3 me from the horns of the wild oxen!

22  uI will tell of your name to my brothers;

in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:

23  You who fear the Lord, praise him!

All you offspring of Jacob, vglorify him,

and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!

24  For he has not despised or abhorred

the affliction of the afflicted,

and he has not hidden his face from him,

but has heard, when he cried to him.

25  From you comes my praise in the great congregation;

my vows I will wperform before those who fear him.

26  The afflicted4 shall eat and be satisfied;

those who seek him shall praise the Lord!

May your hearts live forever!

27  All the xends of the earth shall remember

and turn to the Lord,

and all the families of the nations

shall worship before you.

28  For kingship belongs to the Lord,

and he rules over the nations.

29  All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;

before him shall bow all who go down yto the dust,

even the one who could not keep himself alive.

30  Posterity shall serve him;

it shall be ztold of the Lord to the coming generation;

31  they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people ayet unborn,

that he has done it.

Psalm 31

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

1  rIn you, O Lord, do I take refuge;

let me never be put to shame;

sin your righteousness deliver me!

2  Incline your ear to me;

rescue me speedily!

Be a trock of refuge for me,

a strong fortress to save me!

3  For you are my rock and my fortress;

and ufor your name’s sake you lead me and guide me;

4  vyou take me out of the net they have hidden for me,

for you are my refuge.

5  wInto your hand I commit my spirit;

you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.

6  xI hate1 those who pay regard to worthless idols,

but I trust in the Lord.

7  I will rejoice and be yglad in your steadfast love,

because you have seen my affliction;

you have known the distress of my soul,

8  and you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy;

you have set my feet in a zbroad place.

9  Be gracious to me, O Lord, for aI am in distress;

bmy eye is wasted from grief;

my soul and my body also.

10  For my life is spent with sorrow,

and my years with csighing;

my strength fails because of my iniquity,

and dmy bones waste away.

11  Because of all my adversaries I have become a reproach,

especially to my neighbors,

and an object of dread to my eacquaintances;

those who see me in the street flee from me.

12  fI have been forgotten like one who is dead;

I have become glike a broken vessel.

13  For hI hear the whispering of many—

terror on every side!—

as they scheme together against me,

as they plot to take my life.

14  But I trust in you, O Lord;

iI say, “You are my God.”

15  My times are in your hand;

rescue me jfrom the hand of my enemies and kfrom my persecutors!

16  lMake your face shine on your servant;

save me in your steadfast love!

17  O Lord, let me not be put to shame,

for I call upon you;

let the wicked be put to shame;

let them go silently to Sheol.

18  Let the lying lips be mute,

which speak insolently against the righteous

in pride and contempt.

19  Oh, how abundant is your goodness,

which you have stored up for those who fear you

and worked for those who take refuge in you,

in the sight of the children of mankind!

20  In the mcover of your presence you hide them

from the plots of men;

you store them in your nshelter

from the strife of tongues.

21  Blessed be the Lord,

for he has owondrously shown his steadfast love to me

when I was in a besieged city.

22  pI had said in my alarm,2

q“I am cut off from your sight.”

But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy

when I cried to you for help.

23  Love the Lord, all you his saints!

The Lord preserves the faithful

but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.

24  Be strong, and let your heart take courage,

all you who rwait for the Lord!

To the choirmaster. A Maskil1 of the sSons of Korah.

1  As a deer pants for flowing streams,

so pants my soul for you, O God.

2  tMy soul thirsts for God,

for the living God.

When shall I come and uappear before God?2

3  vMy tears have been my food

day and night,

while they wsay to me all the day long,

x“Where is your God?”

4  These things I remember,

as I ypour out my soul:

how I would go zwith the throng

and lead them in procession to the house of God

with glad shouts and songs of praise,

a multitude keeping festival.

5  aWhy are you cast down, O my soul,

and why are you in turmoil within me?

Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,

my salvation3 6 and my God.

My soul is cast down within me;

therefore I remember you

from the land of Jordan and of Hermon,

from Mount Mizar.

7  Deep calls to deep

at the roar of your waterfalls;

ball your breakers and your waves

have gone over me.

8  By day the Lord commands his steadfast love,

and at cnight his song is with me,

a prayer to the God of my life.

9  I say to God, my rock:

“Why have you forgotten me?

Why do I dgo mourning

because of the oppression of the enemy?”

10  As with a deadly wound in my bones,

my adversaries taunt me,

while they say to me all the day long,

“Where is your God?”

11  Why are you cast down, O my soul,

and why are you in turmoil within me?

Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,

my salvation and my God.

Psalm 44

To the choirmaster. A Maskil1 of the Sons of Korah.

1  O God, we have heard with our ears,

hour fathers have told us,

what deeds you performed in their days,

in the idays of old:

2  you with your own hand drove out the nations,

but them you planted;

you afflicted the peoples,

but them you set free;

3  for jnot by their own sword did they win the land,

nor did their own arm save them,

but your right hand and your arm,

and the klight of your face,

for you delighted in them.

4  You are my King, O God;

ordain salvation for Jacob!

5  Through you we push down our foes;

through your name we tread down those who rise up against us.

6  For lnot in my bow do I trust,

nor can my sword save me.

7  But you have saved us from our foes

and have put to shame those who hate us.

8  In God we have mboasted continually,

and nwe will give thanks to your name forever. Selah

9  But you have orejected us and disgraced us

and phave not gone out with our armies.

10  You have made us turn back from the foe,

and those who hate us have gotten spoil.

11  You have made us qlike sheep for slaughter

and have rscattered us among the nations.

12  You have ssold your people for a trifle,

demanding no high price for them.

13  You have made us the taunt of our neighbors,

the tderision and scorn of those around us.

14  You have made us a byword among the nations,

a laughingstock2 among the peoples.

15  All day long my disgrace is before me,

and shame has covered my face

16  at the sound of the taunter and reviler,

at the sight of the enemy and the avenger.

17  All this has come upon us,

though we have not uforgotten you,

and we have not been false to your covenant.

18  Our heart has not turned back,

vnor have our steps departed from your way;

19  yet you have broken us in the place of jackals

and covered us with the shadow of death.

20  wIf we had forgotten the name of our God

or spread out our hands to a xforeign god,

21  would not God discover this?

For he yknows the secrets of the heart.

22  Yet zfor your sake we are killed all the day long;

we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

23  aAwake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord?

Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever!

24  Why do you hide your face?

Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?

25  For bour soul is bowed down to the dust;

our belly clings to the ground.

26  Rise up; come to our help!

Redeem us cfor the sake of your steadfast love!

Psalm 88

A Song. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. To the choirmaster: according to sMahalath Leannoth. A Maskil1 of Heman the Ezrahite.

1  O Lord, God of my salvation,

I tcry out uday and night before you.

2  Let my prayer come before you;

incline your ear to my cry!

3  For my soul is full of troubles,

and my life draws near to Sheol.

4  I am counted among those who go down to the pit;

I am a man who has no strength,

5  like one set loose among the dead,

vlike the slain that lie in the grave,

like those whom you remember no more,

for they are cut off from your hand.

6  You have put me in the depths of the pit,

in the regions dark and deep.

7  Your wrath lies heavy upon me,

and you overwhelm me with all your waves. Selah

8  You have caused my wcompanions to shun me;

you have made me a horror2 to them.

I am shut in so that I cannot escape;

9  xmy eye grows dim through sorrow.

yEvery day I call upon you, O Lord;

I spread out my hands to you.

10  Do you work wonders for the dead?

zDo the departed rise up to praise you? Selah

11  Is your steadfast love declared in the grave,

or your faithfulness in Abaddon?

12  Are your wonders known in the darkness,

or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

13  But I, O Lord, cry to you;

ain the morning my prayer comes before you.

14  O Lord, why do you cast my soul away?

Why do you hide your face from me?

15  Afflicted and close to death from my youth up,

I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.3

16  Your wrath has swept over me;

your dreadful assaults destroy me.

17  They surround me like a flood all day long;

they close in on me together.

18  You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me;

my companions have become darkness.4
