Jeremiah 15–17

The Lord Will Not Relent

1 Then the Lord said to me, i“Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my heart would not turn toward this people. Send them out of my sight, and let them go! 2 And when they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord:

j“‘Those who are for pestilence, to pestilence,

and those who are for the sword, to the sword;

those who are for famine, to famine,

and those who are for captivity, to captivity.’

3 I will appoint over them four kinds of destroyers, declares the Lord: the sword to kill, the dogs to tear, and the birds of the air and the kbeasts of the earth to devour and destroy. 4 And I will make them a lhorror to all the kingdoms of the earth because of mwhat Manasseh the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, did in Jerusalem.

5  n“Who will have pity on you, O Jerusalem,

or who will grieve for you?

Who will turn aside

to ask about your welfare?

6  You have rejected me, declares the Lord;

you keep going obackward,

so I have stretched out my hand against you and destroyed you—

I am weary of relenting.

7  I have winnowed them with a winnowing fork

in the gates of the land;

I have bereaved them; I have destroyed my people;

they did not turn from their ways.

8  I have made their widows more in number

than the sand of the seas;

I have brought against the mothers of young men

a destroyer pat noonday;

I have made anguish and terror

fall upon them suddenly.

9  qShe who bore seven has grown feeble;

she has fainted away;

rher sun went down while it was yet day;

she has been shamed and disgraced.

And the rest of them I will give to the sword

before their enemies,

declares the Lord.”

Jeremiah’s Complaint

10 sWoe is me, my mother, that you bore me, a man of strife and contention to the whole land! I have not lent, nor have I borrowed, yet all of them curse me. 11 The Lord said, “Have I not1 set you free for their good? Have I not pleaded for you before the enemy in the time of trouble and in the time of distress? 12 Can one break iron, iron from the north, and bronze?

13 t“Your wealth and your treasures I will give as spoil, uwithout price, for all your sins, throughout all your territory. 14 I will make you serve your enemies in a land that you do not know, for vin my anger a fire is kindled that shall burn forever.”

15  O Lord, wyou know;

remember me and visit me,

and take xvengeance for me on my persecutors.

In your forbearance take me not away;

know that for your sake I bear reproach.

16  Your words were found, yand I ate them,

and your words became to me a joy

and the delight of my heart,

for I am called by your name,

O Lord, God of hosts.

17  I did not sit in the company of revelers,

nor did I rejoice;

I sat alone, because your hand was upon me,

for you had filled me with indignation.

18  Why is my pain unceasing,

my wound incurable,

refusing to be healed?

Will you be to me zlike a deceitful brook,

like waters that fail?

19  Therefore thus says the Lord:

“If you return, I will restore you,

and you shall stand before me.

If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless,

you shall be as my mouth.

They shall turn to you,

but you shall not turn to them.

20  And I will make you to this people

a fortified awall of bronze;

they will fight against you,

but they shall not prevail over you,

for I am bwith you

to save you and deliver you,

declares the Lord.

21  I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked,

and credeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.”

Famine, Sword, and Death

1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “You shall not take a wife, nor shall you have sons or daughters in this place. 3 For thus says the Lord concerning the sons and daughters who are born in this place, and concerning the mothers who bore them and the fathers who fathered them in this land: 4 They shall die of deadly diseases. They shall not be lamented, nor shall they be buried. dThey shall be as dung on the surface of the ground. They shall perish by the sword and by famine, and their dead bodies shall be food for the birds of the air and for the beasts of the earth.

5 “For thus says the Lord: eDo not enter the house of mourning, or go to lament or grieve for them, for I have taken away my peace from this people, my steadfast love and mercy, declares the Lord. 6 Both great and small shall die in this land. They shall not be buried, and no one shall lament for them or fcut himself or make himself gbald for them. 7 No one shall break hbread for the mourner, to comfort him for the dead, nor shall anyone give him the cup of consolation to drink for his father or his mother. 8 You shall not go into the house of feasting to sit with them, to eat and drink. 9 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will silence in this place, before your eyes and in your days, ithe voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.

10 “And when you tell this people all these words, and they say to you, j‘Why has the Lord pronounced all this great evil against us? What is our iniquity? What is the sin that we have committed against the Lord our God?’ 11 then you shall say to them: ‘Because your fathers have kforsaken me, declares the Lord, and have gone after other gods and have served and worshiped them, and have forsaken me and have not kept my law, 12 and because you have done lworse than your fathers, for behold, every one of you follows his mstubborn, evil will, refusing to listen to me. 13 Therefore I will hurl you out of this land into a land that neither you nor your fathers have known, and nthere you shall serve other gods day and night, for I will show you no favor.’

The Lord Will Restore Israel

14 o“Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when it shall no longer be said, ‘As the Lord lives who brought up the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt,’ 15 but ‘As the Lord lives who brought up the people of Israel pout of the north country and out of all the countries where he had driven them.’ For I will bring them back to their own land that I gave to their fathers.

16 “Behold, I am sending for many qfishers, declares the Lord, and they shall catch them. And afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and rout of the clefts of the rocks. 17 For my seyes are on all their ways. They are not hidden from me, nor is their iniquity concealed from my eyes. 18 But first I will tdoubly repay their iniquity and their sin, because they have polluted my land with the carcasses of their detestable idols, and have filled my inheritance with their abominations.”

19  O Lord, my strength and my stronghold,

my refuge in the day of trouble,

to you shall the nations come

from the ends of the earth and say:

“Our fathers have inherited nothing but lies,

worthless things in which there is no profit.

20  Can man make for himself gods?

Such are unot gods!”

21 “Therefore, behold, I will make them know, this once I will make them know my power and my might, and they shall know that vmy name is the Lord.”

The Sin of Judah

1 “The sin of Judah is written wwith a pen of iron; with a point of diamond it is engraved on the tablet of their heart, and on the horns of their altars, 2 while their children remember their altars and their Asherim, xbeside every green tree and on the high hills, 3 on the mountains in the open country. yYour wealth and all your treasures I will give for spoil as the price of your high places for sin throughout all your territory. 4 You shall loosen your hand from your heritage that I gave to you, and I will make you serve your enemies in a land that you do not know, for zin my anger a fire is kindled that shall burn forever.”

5  Thus says the Lord:

“Cursed is the man who atrusts in man

and makes flesh his strength,2

whose heart turns away from the Lord.

6  He is like a shrub in the desert,

and shall not see any good come.

He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness,

in an uninhabited salt land.

7  “Blessed is the man who btrusts in the Lord,

whose trust is the Lord.

8  cHe is like a tree planted by water,

that sends out its roots by the stream,

and does not fear when heat comes,

for its leaves remain green,

and is not anxious in the year of drought,

for it does not cease to bear fruit.”

9  The heart is deceitful above all things,

and desperately sick;

who can understand it?

10  “I the Lord search the heart

and dtest the mind,3

eto give every man according to his ways,

according to the fruit of his deeds.”

11  Like the partridge that gathers a brood that she did not hatch,

so is he who gets riches but not by justice;

in the midst of his days they will leave him,

and at his end he will be a fool.

12  A glorious throne set on high from the beginning

is the place of our sanctuary.

13  O Lord, the fhope of Israel,

all who gforsake you shall be put to shame;

those who turn away from you4 shall be written in the earth,

for they have forsaken the Lord, the hfountain of living water.

Jeremiah Prays for Deliverance

14  Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed;

save me, and I shall be saved,

for iyou are my praise.

15  Behold, they say to me,

j“Where is the word of the Lord?

Let it come!”

16  I have not run away from being your shepherd,

nor have I desired the day of sickness.

You know what came out of my lips;

it was before your face.

17  Be not a terror to me;

you are my refuge in the day of disaster.

18  Let those be put to shame who persecute me,

but let me not be put to shame;

let them be dismayed,

but let me not be dismayed;

bring upon them the day of disaster;

destroy them with double destruction!

Keep the Sabbath Holy

19 Thus said the Lord to me: “Go and kstand in the People’s Gate, by which the kings of Judah enter and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem, 20 and say: ‘Hear the word of the Lord, you kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, who enter by these gates. 21 Thus says the Lord: Take care for the sake of your lives, and do not bear a burden on the lSabbath day or bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem. 22 And do not carry a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath or do any work, but keep the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your fathers. 23 mYet nthey did not listen or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck, that they might not hear and oreceive instruction.

24 “‘But if you listen to me, declares the Lord, and bring in no burden by the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but keep the Sabbath day holy and do no work on it, 25 pthen there shall enter by the gates of this city kings and princes who sit on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their officials, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And this city shall be inhabited forever. 26 And people shall come from the cities of Judah and the places around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin, from the qShephelah, from the hill country, and from the Negeb, bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and frankincense, and bringing thank offerings to the house of the Lord. 27 But if you do not listen to me, to keep the Sabbath day holy, and not to bear a burden and enter by the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle a rfire in its gates, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem and shall not be quenched.’”

Psalm 107:23–43

23  Some went down to the sea in ships,

doing business on the great waters;

24  they saw the deeds of the Lord,

his wondrous works in the deep.

25  For bhe commanded and raised the stormy wind,

which lifted up the waves of the sea.

26  They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths;

ctheir courage melted away in their evil plight;

27  they reeled and staggered like drunken men

and were at their wits’ end.1

28  Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,

and he delivered them from their distress.

29  dHe made the estorm be still,

and the waves of the sea were hushed.

30  Then they were glad that the waters2 were quiet,

and he brought them to their desired haven.

31  Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,

for his wondrous works to the children of man!

32  Let them extol him in the congregation of the people,

and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

33  He turns rivers into a desert,

springs of water into thirsty ground,

34  a fruitful land into a salty waste,

because of the evil of its inhabitants.

35  He turns a desert into pools of water,

a parched land into springs of water.

36  And there he lets the hungry dwell,

and they establish a city to live in;

37  they sow fields and plant vineyards

and get a fruitful yield.

38  By his fblessing they multiply greatly,

and he does not let their livestock diminish.

39  When they are diminished and brought low

through oppression, evil, and sorrow,

40  ghe pours contempt on princes

and hmakes them wander in trackless wastes;

41  but he raises up the needy out of affliction

and makes their families like flocks.

42  iThe upright see it and are glad,

and jall wickedness shuts its mouth.

43  Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things;

let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.

Romans 9–11

God’s Sovereign Choice

1 sI am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— 2 that tI have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were uaccursed and cut off from Christ vfor the sake of my brothers,1 my kinsmen waccording to the flesh. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the xadoption, the yglory, zthe acovenants, bthe cgiving of the law, the dworship, and the epromises. 5 To them belong the patriarchs, and ffrom their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God gover all, blessed forever. Amen.

6 hBut it is not as though the word of God has failed. For inot all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7 and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but j“Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the kchildren of the promise are lcounted as offspring. 9 For this is what the promise said: m“About this time next year I will return, and Sarah shall have a son.” 10 And not only so, but also nwhen Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, 11 though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s opurpose of pelection might continue, qnot because of works but because of him who calls— 12 she was told, r“The older will serve the younger.” 13 As it is written, s“Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

14 tWhat shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! 15 For he says to Moses, u“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it depends vnot on human will or exertion,2 but on God, who has wmercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, x“For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he yhardens whomever he wills.

19 You will say to me then, “Why does he still find fault? For zwho can resist his will?” 20 But awho are you, O man, to answer back to God? bWill what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 cHas the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump done vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? 22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much epatience vessels of wrath fprepared for destruction, 23 in order to make known the griches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has hprepared beforehand for glory— 24 even us whom he has called, inot from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? 25 As indeed he says in Hosea,

j“Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’

and her who was not beloved I will call ‘beloved.’”

26  k“And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’

there they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’”

27 And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: l“Though mthe number of the sons of Israel3 be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved, 28 for the Lord will carry out his sentence upon the earth fully and without delay.” 29 And as Isaiah predicted,

n“If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring,

we would have been like Sodom

and become like Gomorrah.”

Israel’s Unbelief

30 oWhat shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a prighteousness that is by faith; 31 but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness4 qdid not succeed in reaching that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the rstumbling stone, 33 as it is written,

s“Behold, I am laying in Zion ta stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense;

and uwhoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

1 Brothers,5 vmy heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a wzeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For, being ignorant of the xrighteousness of God, and yseeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. 4 For zChrist is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.6

The Message of Salvation to All

5 For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that athe person who does the commandments shall live by them. 6 But the brighteousness based on faith says, c“Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you dconfess with your mouth that eJesus is Lord and fbelieve in your heart that gGod raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, h“Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is ino distinction between jJew and Greek; for the same Lord is kLord of all, lbestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For m“everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?7 And nhow are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, o“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But pthey have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, q“Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So rfaith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

18 But I ask, have they not heard? sIndeed they have, for

t“Their voice has gone out uto all the earth,

and their words to the ends of the world.”

19 But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says,

v“I will wmake you jealous of those who are not a nation;

with a foolish nation I will make you angry.”

20 Then Isaiah is so bold as to say,

x“I have been found yby those who did not seek me;

I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.”

21 But of Israel he says, z“All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”

The Remnant of Israel

1 I ask, then, has God arejected his people? By no means! For bI myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham,8 a member of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God has not rejected his people whom he cforeknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? 3 d“Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.” 4 But what is God’s reply to him? e“I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” 5 So too at the present time there is a fremnant, chosen by grace. 6 But gif it is by grace, it is hno longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be igrace.

7 What then? Israel jfailed to obtain what it was seeking. The kelect obtained it, but the rest were hardened, 8 as it is written,

l“God gave them a spirit of stupor,

meyes that would not see

and ears that would not hear,

down to this very day.”

9 And David says,

n“Let their table become a snare and a trap,

a stumbling block and a retribution for them;

10  let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see,

and bend their backs forever.”

Gentiles Grafted In

11 So I ask, did they stumble in order that they might fall? By no means! Rather, through their trespass osalvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to pmake Israel jealous. 12 Now if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion9 mean!

13 Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an qapostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry 14 in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous, and thus rsave some of them. 15 For if their rejection means the sreconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead? 16 If the dough offered as tfirstfruits is holy, so is the whole lump, and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

17 uBut if some of the branches were broken off, and you, valthough a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root10 of the olive tree, 18 do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you. 19 Then you will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” 20 That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith. wSo do not become proud, but fear. 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. 22 Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, xprovided you continue in his kindness. yOtherwise you too will be cut off. 23 And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. 24 For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree.

The Mystery of Israel’s Salvation

25 Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this zmystery, brothers:11 a partial ahardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written,

b“The Deliverer will come from Zion,

he will banish ungodliness from Jacob”;

27  “and this will be my covenant with them

cwhen I take away their sins.”

28 As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are dbeloved for the sake of their forefathers. 29 For the egifts and the fcalling of God are irrevocable. 30 For just as you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now12 receive mercy. 32 For God has consigned gall to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.

33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! hHow unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

34  i“For who has known the mind of the Lord,

or who has been his counselor?”

35  j“Or who has given a gift to him

that he might be repaid?”

36 For kfrom him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
