1  ^rWhy do ^sthe nations rage¹

and the peoples plot in vain?

2  The kings of the earth set themselves,

and the rulers take counsel together,

against the Lord and against his ^tAnointed, saying,

3  “Let us ^uburst their bonds apart

and cast away their cords from us.”

4  He who ^vsits in the heavens ^wlaughs;

the Lord holds them in derision.

5  Then he will speak to them in his ^xwrath,

and terrify them in his fury, saying,

6  “As for me, I have ^yset my King

on ^zZion, my ^aholy hill.”

7  I will tell of the decree:

The Lord said to me, ^b“You are my Son;

today I have begotten you.

8  Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,

and ^cthe ends of the earth your possession.

9  You shall ^dbreak² them with ^ea rod of iron

and dash them in pieces like ^fa potter’s vessel.”

10  Now therefore, O kings, be wise;

be warned, O rulers of the earth.

11  ^gServe the Lord with ^hfear,

and ⁱrejoice with ^htrembling.

12  ^jKiss ^kthe Son,

lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,

for his ^lwrath is quickly kindled.

^mBlessed are all who take refuge in him.

1  ^uMy God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Why are you so ^vfar from saving me, from the words of my ^wgroaning?

2  O my God, I cry by ^xday, but you do not answer,

and by night, but I find no rest.

3  Yet you are ^yholy,

^zenthroned on ^athe praises¹ of Israel.

4  In you our fathers trusted;

they trusted, and you delivered them.

5  To you they ^bcried and were rescued;

in you they ^ctrusted and were not put to shame.

6  But I am ^da worm and not a man,

^escorned by mankind and ^fdespised by the people.

7  All who see me ^gmock me;

they make mouths at me; they ^hwag their heads;

8  ⁱ“He trusts in the Lord; let him ^jdeliver him;

let him rescue him, for he ^kdelights in him!”

9  Yet you are he who ^ltook me from the womb;

you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.

10  On you was I cast from my birth,

and from ^mmy mother’s womb you have been my God.

11  Be not ⁿfar from me,

for trouble is near,

and there is ^onone to help.

12  Many bulls encompass me;

^pstrong bulls of ^qBashan surround me;

13  they ^ropen wide their mouths at me,

like a ravening and roaring lion.

14  I am ^spoured out like water,

and all my bones are ^tout of joint;

my ^uheart is like ^vwax;

it is melted within my breast;

15  my strength is ^wdried up like a potsherd,

and my ^xtongue sticks to my jaws;

you lay me in the dust of death.

16  For ^ydogs encompass me;

a company of evildoers ^zencircles me;

they have ^apierced my hands and feet²—

17  I can count all my bones—

they ^bstare and gloat over me;

18  ^cthey divide my garments among them,

and for my clothing they cast lots.

19  But you, O Lord, ⁿdo not be far off!

O you my help, ^dcome quickly to my aid!

20  Deliver my soul from the sword,

my precious life from the power of ^ethe dog!

21  Save me from ^fthe mouth of the lion!

You have rescued³ me from the horns of ^gthe wild oxen!

22  ^hI will tell of your name to my ⁱbrothers;

in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:

23  You who ^jfear the Lord, praise him!

All you offspring of Jacob, ^kglorify him,

and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!

24  For he has not despised or abhorred

the affliction of ^lthe afflicted,

and he has not ^mhidden his face from him,

but has heard, when he ⁿcried to him.

25  From you comes my praise in the great ^ocongregation;

my ^pvows I will ^qperform before those who fear him.

26  ^rThe afflicted⁴ shall ^seat and be satisfied;

those who seek him shall praise the Lord!

May your hearts ^tlive forever!

27  All ^uthe ends of the earth shall remember

and turn to the Lord,

and all ^vthe families of the nations

shall worship before you.

28  For ^wkingship belongs to the Lord,

and he rules over the nations.

29  All ^xthe prosperous of the earth eat and worship;

before him shall ^ybow all who go down to the dust,

even the one who could not ^zkeep himself alive.

30  Posterity shall serve him;

it shall be told of the Lord to the coming ^ageneration;

31  they shall ^bcome and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet ^cunborn,

that he has done it.

1  ⁱI will sing of ^jthe steadfast love of the Lord forever;

with my mouth I will make known your ^kfaithfulness to all generations.

2  For I said, ^j“Steadfast love will be built up forever;

in the heavens ^lyou will establish your ^kfaithfulness.”

3  You have said, “I have made ^ma covenant with my ⁿchosen one;

I have ^osworn to David my servant:

4  ‘I will establish your ^poffspring forever,

and build your ^qthrone for all generations.’” Selah

5  Let ^rthe heavens praise your ^swonders, O Lord,

your faithfulness in the assembly of ^tthe holy ones!

6  For ^uwho in the skies can be compared to the Lord?

^uWho among the heavenly beings² is like the Lord,

7  a God greatly ^vto be feared in the council of ^tthe holy ones,

and awesome above all ^wwho are around him?

8  O Lord God of hosts,

^xwho is mighty as you are, O ^yLord,

with your faithfulness all around you?

9  You rule the raging of the sea;

when its waves rise, you ^zstill them.

10  You ^acrushed ^bRahab like a carcass;

you ^cscattered your enemies with your mighty arm.

11  ^dThe heavens are yours; the earth also is yours;

^ethe world and all that is in it, you have ^ffounded them.

12  ^gThe north and the south, you have created them;

^hTabor and ⁱHermon ^jjoyously praise your name.

13  You have a mighty arm;

strong is your hand, high your right hand.

14  ^kRighteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;

^lsteadfast love and faithfulness go before you.

15  Blessed are the people who know ^mthe festal shout,

who walk, O Lord, in ⁿthe light of your face,

16  who exult in your ^oname all the day

and in your righteousness are ^pexalted.

17  For you are ^qthe glory of their strength;

by your favor our ^rhorn is exalted.

18  For our ^sshield belongs to the Lord,

our king to ^tthe Holy One of Israel.

19  ^uOf old you spoke in a vision to your godly one,³ and said:

“I have ^vgranted help to one who is ^wmighty;

I have exalted one ^xchosen from the people.

20  ^yI have found David, my servant;

with my holy oil I have ^zanointed him,

21  so that my ^ahand shall be established with him;

my arm also shall strengthen him.

22  The enemy shall not outwit him;

^bthe wicked shall not humble him.

23  I will ^ccrush his foes before him

and strike down those who hate him.

24  My ^dfaithfulness and my ^dsteadfast love shall be with him,

and in my name shall his ^ehorn be exalted.

25  I will set his hand on ^fthe sea

and his right hand on ^fthe rivers.

26  He shall cry to me, ‘You are my ^gFather,

my God, and ^hthe Rock of my salvation.’

27  And I will make him the ⁱfirstborn,

^jthe highest of the kings of the earth.

28  My steadfast love I will keep for him forever,

and my ^kcovenant will stand firm⁴ for him.

29  I will establish his ^loffspring forever

and his ^lthrone as ^mthe days of the heavens.

30  ⁿIf his children forsake my law

and do not walk according to my rules,⁵

31  if they violate my statutes

and do not keep my commandments,

32  then I will punish their transgression with ^othe rod

and their iniquity with stripes,

33  but I will not remove from him my steadfast love

or be false to my faithfulness.

34  I will not violate my ^kcovenant

or alter the word that went forth from my lips.

35  Once for all I have sworn ^pby my holiness;

I will not ^qlie to David.

36  His ^loffspring shall endure forever,

^rhis ^lthrone as long as ^sthe sun before me.

37  Like ^sthe moon it shall be established forever,

^ta faithful witness in the skies.” Selah

38  But now you have ^ucast off and rejected;

you are full of wrath against your ^vanointed.

39  You have ^wrenounced ^xthe covenant with your servant;

you have ^ydefiled his ^zcrown in the dust.

40  You have ^abreached all his walls;

you have laid his strongholds in ruins.

41  ^aAll who pass by plunder him;

he has become ^bthe scorn of his neighbors.

42  You have exalted the right hand of his foes;

you have made all his enemies rejoice.

43  You have also turned back the edge of his sword,

and you have not made him stand in battle.

44  You have made his splendor to cease

and cast his throne to the ground.

45  You have cut short ^cthe days of his youth;

you have ^dcovered him with shame. Selah

46  ^eHow long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?

How long will your wrath ^fburn like fire?

47  ^gRemember ^hhow short my ⁱtime is!

For what vanity you have created all the children of man!

48  ^jWhat man can live and never ^ksee death?

Who can deliver his soul from the power of ^lSheol? Selah

49  Lord, where is your ^msteadfast love of old,

which by your ^mfaithfulness you swore to David?

50  ⁿRemember, O Lord, how your servants are mocked,

and how I bear in my ^oheart the insults⁶ of all the many nations,

51  with which your enemies mock, O Lord,

with which they mock ^pthe footsteps of your ^qanointed.

52  ^rBlessed be the Lord forever!

1  ^qThe Lord says to my Lord:

^r“Sit at my right hand,

^suntil I make your enemies your ^tfootstool.”

2  The Lord sends forth ^ufrom Zion

^vyour mighty scepter.

^wRule in the midst of your enemies!

3  ^xYour people will ^yoffer themselves freely

on the day of your ^zpower,¹

in ^aholy garments;²

from the womb of the morning,

the dew of your youth will be yours.³

4  ^bThe Lord has ^csworn

and will ^dnot change his mind,

^e“You are ^fa priest ^gforever

after the order of ^hMelchizedek.”

5  The Lord is at your ⁱright hand;

he will ^jshatter kings on ^kthe day of his wrath.

6  He will ^lexecute judgment among the nations,

^mfilling them with corpses;

he will ⁿshatter chiefs⁴

over the wide earth.

7  He will ^odrink from the brook by the way;

therefore he will lift up his head.
