Psalm 61

Lead Me to the Rock

To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. Of David.

1  Hear my cry, O God,

listen to my prayer;

2  from the end of the earth I call to you

jwhen my heart is faint.

Lead me to the rock

that is higher than I,

3  for you have been my refuge,

a kstrong tower against the enemy.

4  Let me ldwell in your tent forever!

Let me take refuge munder the shelter of your wings! Selah

5  For you, O God, have heard my vows;

you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.

6  Prolong the life of the king;

nmay his years endure to all generations!

7  May he be enthroned forever before God;

appoint osteadfast love and faithfulness to watch over him!

8  So will I ever sing praises to your name,

as I perform my vows day after day.

Psalm 62

My Soul Waits for God Alone

To the choirmaster: according to pJeduthun. A Psalm of David.

1  qFor God alone my soul waits rin silence;

from him comes my salvation.

2  He alone is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.

3  How long will all of you attack a man

to batter him,

like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?

4  They only plan to thrust him down from his high position.

They take pleasure in falsehood.

They bless with their mouths,

sbut inwardly they curse. Selah

5  tFor God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,

for my hope is from him.

6  He only is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

7  On God rests my salvation and my glory;

my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

8  uTrust in him at all times, O people;

vpour out your heart before him;

God is a refuge for us. Selah

9  Those of wlow estate are but a breath;

those of high estate are a delusion;

in the balances they go up;

they are together lighter than a breath.

10  Put no xtrust in extortion;

set no vain hopes on robbery;

yif riches increase, set not your heart on them.

11  Once God has spoken;

twice have I heard this:

that power belongs to God,

12  and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.

For you will render to a man

zaccording to his work.

Deuteronomy 6

The Greatest Commandment

1 “Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the rules1—that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it, 2 that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. 3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, qthat it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, ras the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.

4 s“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is tone.2 5 uYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be von your heart. 7 wYou shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 xYou shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as yfrontlets between your eyes. 9 zYou shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

10 “And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—awith great and good cities that you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, 12 bthen take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 cIt is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and dby his name you shall swear. 14 You shall not go after other gods, the egods of the peoples who are around you— 15 for the Lord your God in your midst fis a jealous God—lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.

16 g“You shall not hput the Lord your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah. 17 You shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies and his statutes, which he has commanded you. 18 And you shall ido what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, that it may go well with you, and that you may go in and take possession of the good land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers 19 by thrusting out all your enemies from before you, as the Lord has promised.

20 j“When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you?’ 21 then you shall say to your son, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt. And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22 And the Lord showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes. 23 And he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers. 24 And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, kfor our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are this day. 25 And lit will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us.’

Luke 10:38–11:13

Martha and Mary

38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus1 entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But bMartha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, c“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but done thing is necessary.2 Mary has chosen the egood portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

The Lord’s Prayer

1 fNow Jesus3 was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2 And he said to them, “When you pray, say:

“Father, ghallowed be your name.

Your hkingdom come.

3  Give us each day our idaily bread,4

4  and jforgive us our sins,

for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

And klead us not into temptation.”

5 And he said to them, l“Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6 for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence5 he will rise and give him whatever he needs. 9 mAnd I tell you, nask, and it will be given to you; oseek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son asks for6 a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, phow much more qwill the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
