Jeremiah 5:20–31

20  Declare this in the house of Jacob;

proclaim it in Judah:

21  “Hear this, O efoolish and senseless people,

fwho have eyes, but see not,

who have ears, but hear not.

22  gDo you not fear me? declares the Lord.

Do you not tremble before me?

hI placed the sand as the boundary for the sea,

a perpetual barrier that it cannot pass;

though the waves toss, they cannot prevail;

though they roar, they cannot pass over it.

23  But this people has a istubborn jand rebellious heart;

they have turned aside and gone away.

24  They do not say in their hearts,

‘Let us fear the Lord our God,

kwho gives the rain in its season,

the autumn rain and the spring rain,

and keeps for us

the weeks appointed for the harvest.’

25  Your iniquities have turned these away,

and your sins have kept good from you.

26  For wicked men are found among my people;

they lurk like fowlers lying in wait.1

They set a trap;

they catch men.

27  Like a cage full of birds,

their houses are full of deceit;

therefore they have become great and rich;

28  they have lgrown fat and sleek.

They know no bounds in deeds of evil;

they judge not with mjustice

the cause of the fatherless, to make it prosper,

and they do not defend the rights of the needy.

29  nShall I not punish them for these things?

declares the Lord,

and shall I not avenge myself

on a nation such as this?”

30  An appalling and ohorrible thing

has happened in the land:

31  the prophets prophesy pfalsely,

and the priests rule at their direction;

my people qlove to have it so,

but what will you do when the end comes?

Romans 3:19–31

19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are kunder the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For lby works of the law no human being1 will be justified in his sight, since mthrough the law comes knowledge of sin.

The Righteousness of God Through Faith

21 But now the nrighteousness of God has been omanifested apart from the law, palthough the Law and the Prophets qbear witness to it— 22 the rrighteousness of God through sfaith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is tno distinction: 23 for uall have vsinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are wjustified xby his grace as a ygift, through the zredemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a apropitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine bforbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of cthe one who has faith in Jesus.

27 Then what becomes of our dboasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the elaw of faith. 28 For fwe hold that one is gjustified by faith apart from works of the law. 29 hOr is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since iGod is one—jwho will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 kDo we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

John 7:1–13

Jesus at the Feast of Booths

1 After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would mnot go about in Judea, because the Jews1 were nseeking to kill him. 2 Now othe Jews’ pFeast of Booths was at hand. 3 So his brothers2 said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, qshow yourself to the world.” 5 For rnot even his brothers believed in him. 6 Jesus said to them, s“My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it thates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast. I am not3 going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” 9 After saying this, he remained in Galilee.

10 But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. 11 The Jews were ulooking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” 12 And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” vothers said, “No, he is leading the people astray.” 13 Yet wfor fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.
