Ezekiel 18–19

The Soul Who Sins Shall Die

1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “What do you1 mean by repeating this vproverb concerning the land of Israel, w‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’? 3 As I live, declares the Lord God, xthis proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. 4 Behold, all souls are mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: ythe soul who sins shall die.

5 “If a man is righteous and does what is just and right— 6 if he does not zeat upon the mountains or alift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, does not defile his bneighbor’s wife or capproach a woman in her time of menstrual impurity, 7 does not doppress anyone, but restores to the debtor his epledge, commits no frobbery, ggives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with a garment, 8 does not lend at hinterest or take any profit,2 withholds his hand from injustice, executes itrue justice between man and man, 9 walks in my statutes, and keeps my rules by acting faithfully—he is righteous; jhe shall surely live, declares the Lord God.

10 “If he fathers a son who is violent, a shedder of blood, who does any of these things 11 (though he himself did none of these things), who even eats upon the mountains, defiles his neighbor’s wife, 12 oppresses the poor and needy, commits robbery, does not restore the pledge, lifts up his eyes to the idols, commits abomination, 13 lends at interest, and takes profit; shall he then live? He shall not live. He has done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon himself.

14 “Now suppose this man fathers a son who sees all the sins that his father has done; he sees, and does not do likewise: 15 he does not eat upon the mountains or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, does not defile his neighbor’s wife, 16 does not oppress anyone, exacts no pledge, commits no robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with a garment, 17 withholds his hand from iniquity,3 takes no interest or profit, obeys my rules, and walks in my statutes; he shall not die for his father’s iniquity; he shall surely live. 18 As for his father, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother, and did what is not good among his people, behold, khe shall die for his iniquity.

19 “Yet you say, l‘Why should not the son suffer for the iniquity of the father?’ When the son has done what is just and right, and has been careful to observe all my statutes, he shall surely live. 20 The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

21 “But if a wicked person mturns away from all his sins that he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does what is just and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 22 nNone of the transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him; for the righteousness that he has done he shall live. 23 oHave I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, declares the Lord God, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live? 24 But pwhen a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice and does the same abominations that the wicked person does, shall he live? None of the righteous deeds that he has done shall be remembered; for the treachery of which he is guilty and the sin he has committed, for them he shall die.

25 “Yet you say, q‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? 26 When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it; for the injustice that he has done he shall die. 27 Again, when a wicked person turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he shall save his life. 28 Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions that he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 29 Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are not just?

30 “Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one raccording to his ways, declares the Lord God. sRepent and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin.4 31 Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a tnew heart and a new spirit! uWhy will you die, O house of Israel? 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord God; so turn, and live.”

A Lament for the Princes of Israel

1 And you, vtake up a lamentation for the princes of Israel, 2 and say:

What was your mother? A lioness!

Among lions she crouched;

in the midst of young lions

she reared her cubs.

3  And she brought up one of her cubs;

he became a young lion,

and he learned to catch prey;

he devoured men.

4  The nations heard about him;

he was caught in their pit,

and they brought him with hooks

wto the land of Egypt.

5  When she saw that she waited in vain,

that her hope was lost,

she took another of her cubs

and made him a young lion.

6  He prowled among the lions;

he became a young lion,

and he learned to catch prey;

he devoured men,

7  and seized5 their widows.

He laid waste their cities,

and the land was appalled and all who were in it

at the sound of his roaring.

8  Then the nations set against him

from provinces on every side;

they spread their net over him;

he was taken in their pit.

9  With hooks they put him in a cage6

and brought him to the king of Babylon;

they brought him into custody,

that his voice should no more be heard

on the mountains of Israel.

10  Your mother was like a vine in a vineyard7

planted by the water,

fruitful and full of branches

by reason of abundant water.

11  Its strong stems became

rulers’ scepters;

it towered aloft

among the thick boughs;8

it was seen in its height

with the mass of its branches.

12  But the vine was plucked up in fury,

cast down to the ground;

the xeast wind dried up its fruit;

they were stripped off and withered.

As for its strong stem,

fire consumed it.

13  Now it is planted in the wilderness,

in a dry and thirsty land.

14  And fire has gone out from the stem of its shoots,

has consumed its fruit,

so that there remains in it no strong stem,

no scepter for ruling.

This is a lamentation and has become a lamentation.

James 4

Warning Against Worldliness

1 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions1 are at twar within you?2 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, ubecause you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask vwrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You wadulterous people!3 xDo you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the yspirit that he has made to dwell in us”? 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, z“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. aResist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 bDraw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you cdouble-minded. 9 dBe wretched and mourn and weep. eLet your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 fHumble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

11 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers.4 The one who speaks against a brother or gjudges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is only one hlawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. iBut who are you to judge your neighbor?

Boasting About Tomorrow

13 Come now, you who say, j“Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet kyou do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a lmist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, m“If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. nAll such boasting is evil. 17 oSo whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
