Exodus 9:29–10:20

29 Moses said to him, “As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will stretch out my hands to the Lord. The thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, so that you may know that gthe earth is the Lord’s. 30 But as for you and your servants, I know that you do not yet fear the Lord God.” 31 (The flax and the barley were struck down, for the barley was in the ear and the flax was in bud. 32 But the wheat and the emmer1 were not struck down, for they are late in coming up.) 33 So Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh and stretched out his hands to the Lord, and the thunder and the hail ceased, and the rain no longer poured upon the earth. 34 But when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunder had ceased, he sinned yet again and hhardened his heart, he and his servants. 35 So the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people of Israel go, ijust as the Lord had spoken through Moses.

The Eighth Plague: Locusts

1 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh, for jI have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, that I may show these ksigns of mine among them, 2 and that lyou may tell in the hearing of your son and of your grandson how I have dealt harshly with the Egyptians and what signs I have done among them, that you may know that I am the Lord.”

3 So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? mLet my people go, that they may serve me. 4 For if you refuse to let my people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring nlocusts into your country, 5 and they shall cover the face of the land, so that no one can see the land. And they shall eat owhat is left to you after the hail, and they shall eat every tree of yours that grows in the field, 6 and they shall fill your houses and the houses of all your servants and of all the Egyptians, as neither your fathers nor your grandfathers have seen, from the day they came on earth to this day.’” Then he turned and went out from Pharaoh.

7 Then Pharaoh’s servants said to him, “How long shall this man be a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve the Lord their God. Do you not yet understand that Egypt is ruined?” 8 So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. And he said to them, p“Go, serve the Lord your God. But which ones are to go?” 9 Moses said, “We will go with our young and our old. We will go with our sons and daughters and with our flocks and herds, for qwe must hold a feast to the Lord.” 10 But he said to them, “The Lord be with you, if ever I let you and your little ones go! Look, you have some evil purpose in mind.2 11 No! Go, the men among you, and serve the Lord, for that is what you are asking.” And they were driven out from Pharaoh’s presence.

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, r“Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, so that they may come upon the land of Egypt and eat every plant in the land, all that the hail has left.” 13 So Moses stretched out his staff over the land of Egypt, and sthe Lord brought an teast wind upon the land all that day and all that night. When it was morning, the east wind had brought the locusts. 14 The locusts came up over all the land of Egypt and settled on the whole country of Egypt, such a dense swarm of locusts as had never been before, nor ever will be again. 15 They covered the face of the whole land, so that the land was darkened, and they ate all the plants in the land and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left. Not a green thing remained, neither tree nor plant of the field, through all the land of Egypt. 16 Then Pharaoh hastily called Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned uagainst the Lord your God, and against you. 17 vNow therefore, forgive my sin, please, only this once, and wplead with the Lord your God only to remove this death from me.” 18 So he went out from Pharaoh and pleaded with the Lord. 19 And the Lord turned the wind into a very strong west wind, which lifted the locusts and drove them into the Red Sea. Not a single locust was left in all the country of Egypt. 20 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and xhe did not let the people of Israel go.

Lamentations 2

The Lord Has Destroyed Without Pity

1  How the Lord in his anger

has set the daughter of Zion under a cloud!

He has cast down from heaven to earth

the splendor of Israel;

he has not remembered his sfootstool

in the day of his anger.

2  The Lord has swallowed up twithout mercy

all the habitations of Jacob;

in his wrath he has broken down

the strongholds of the daughter of Judah;

he has brought down to the ground in dishonor

the kingdom and its rulers.

3  He has cut down in fierce anger

all the might of Israel;

he has uwithdrawn from them his right hand

in the face of the enemy;

he has burned like a flaming fire in Jacob,

consuming all around.

4  He has vbent his bow like an enemy,

with his right hand set like a foe;

and he has killed all who were delightful in our eyes;

in the tent of the daughter of Zion,

he has poured out his fury like fire.

5  The Lord has become like an enemy;

he has swallowed up Israel;

he has swallowed up all its palaces;

he has laid in ruins its wstrongholds,

and he has multiplied in the daughter of Judah

mourning and lamentation.

6  He has laid waste his booth like a garden,

laid in ruins his meeting place;

the Lord has made Zion forget

festival and Sabbath,

and in his fierce indignation has spurned king and priest.

7  The Lord has scorned his altar,

disowned his sanctuary;

he has xdelivered into the hand of the enemy

the walls of her palaces;

they raised a clamor in the house of the Lord

as on the day of festival.

8  The Lord determined to lay in ruins

the wall of the daughter of Zion;

he stretched out the ymeasuring line;

he did not restrain his hand from destroying;

he caused rampart and wall to lament;

they languished together.

9  Her gates have sunk into the ground;

he has ruined and broken her bars;

her king and princes are among the nations;

the law is no more,

and zher prophets find

no vision from the Lord.

10  The elders of the daughter of Zion

asit on the ground in silence;

they have bthrown dust on their heads

and put on sackcloth;

the young women of Jerusalem

have bowed their heads to the ground.

11  My eyes are spent with weeping;

cmy stomach churns;

my bile is poured out to the ground

dbecause of the destruction of the daughter of my people,

because einfants and babies faint

in the streets of the city.

12  They cry to their mothers,

“Where is bread and wine?”

as they faint like a wounded man

in the streets of the city,

as their life is poured out

on their mothers’ bosom.

13  What can I say for you, to what compare you,

O daughter of Jerusalem?

What can I fliken to you, that I may comfort you,

O gvirgin daughter of Zion?

For your ruin is vast as the sea;

hwho can heal you?

14  Your prophets have seen for you

ifalse and deceptive visions;

they have not jexposed your iniquity

to restore your fortunes,

but have seen for you oracles

that are false and misleading.

15  All who pass along the way

clap their hands at you;

they hiss and kwag their heads

at the daughter of Jerusalem:

“Is this the city that was called

the lperfection of beauty,

mthe joy of all the earth?”

16  All your enemies

rail against you;

they hiss, they gnash their teeth,

they cry: “We have swallowed her!

Ah, this is the day we longed for;

now we have it; we see it!”

17  nThe Lord has done what he purposed;

he has carried out his word,

which he commanded long ago;

he has thrown down without pity;

he has made the enemy orejoice over you

and exalted the might of your foes.

18  Their heart cried to the Lord.

O wall of the daughter of Zion,

let tears stream down like a torrent

day and night!

Give yourself no rest,

your eyes no respite!

19  “Arise, cry out in the night,

at the beginning of the night watches!

pPour out your heart like water

before the presence of the Lord!

Lift your hands to him

for the lives of your children,

who faint for hunger

qat the head of every street.”

20  Look, O Lord, and see!

With whom have you dealt thus?

Should women reat the fruit of their womb,

the children of their tender care?

Should priest and prophet be killed

in the sanctuary of the Lord?

21  In the dust of the streets

lie the syoung and the old;

my young women and my young men

have fallen by the sword;

you have killed them in the day of your anger,

slaughtering without pity.

22  You summoned as if to a festival day

my tterrors on every side,

and on the day of the anger of the Lord

no one escaped or survived;

those whom I held and raised

my enemy destroyed.

Hebrews 3

Jesus Greater Than Moses

1 Therefore, holy brothers,1 you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and ahigh priest of our bconfession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as cMoses also was faithful in all God’s2 house. 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) 5 Now dMoses was faithful in all God’s house as a eservant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6 but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a fson. And gwe are his house, hif indeed we ihold fast our jconfidence and our kboasting in our lhope.3

A Rest for the People of God

7 Therefore, mas the Holy Spirit says,

n“Today, if you hear his voice,

8  do not harden your hearts as in othe prebellion,

on the day of qtesting in the wilderness,

9  where your fathers put me to the test

and saw my works for forty years.

10  Therefore I was provoked with that generation,

and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;

they have not known my ways.’

11  As I swore in my wrath,

‘They shall not enter my rest.’”

12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But rexhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said,

s“Today, if you hear his voice,

do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

16 For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, twhose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he uswear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were vdisobedient? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of wunbelief.
