1  ^oThe Mighty One, God the Lord,

speaks and summons the earth

^pfrom the rising of the sun to its setting.

2  Out of Zion, ^qthe perfection of beauty,

^rGod shines forth.

3  Our God comes; he ^sdoes not keep silence;¹

before him is a devouring ^tfire,

around him a mighty tempest.

4  ^uHe calls to the heavens above

and to the earth, that he may judge his people:

5  “Gather to me my faithful ones,

who made ^va covenant with me by sacrifice!”

6  ^wThe heavens declare his righteousness,

for ^xGod himself is judge! Selah

7  ^y“Hear, O my people, and I will speak;

O Israel, I will testify against you.

^zI am God, your God.

8  Not for your sacrifices ^ado I rebuke you;

your burnt offerings are continually before me.

9  I will not accept a bull from your house

or goats from your folds.

10  For every beast of the forest is mine,

the cattle on a thousand hills.

11  ^bI know all the birds of the hills,

and all that moves in the field is mine.

12  “If I were hungry, I would not tell you,

^cfor the world and its fullness are mine.

13  Do I eat the flesh of bulls

or drink the blood of goats?

14  ^dOffer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,²

and ^eperform your vows to the Most High,

15  and ^fcall upon me in the day of trouble;

I will ^gdeliver you, and you shall ^hglorify me.”

16  But to the wicked God says:

“What right have you to recite my statutes

or take my covenant on your lips?

17  ⁱFor you hate discipline,

^jand you cast my words behind you.

18  If you see a thief, ^kyou are pleased with him,

^land you keep company with adulterers.

19  “You give your mouth free rein for evil,

^mand your tongue frames deceit.

20  You sit and speak against your brother;

you slander your own mother’s son.

21  These things you have done, and I ⁿhave been silent;

you thought that I³ was one like yourself.

But now I ^orebuke you and ^play the charge before you.

22  “Mark this, then, you who ^qforget God,

lest I tear you apart, and there be ^rnone to deliver!

23  The one who ^soffers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me;

to one who ^torders his way rightly

I will show the ^usalvation of God!”

1  Hear a just cause, O Lord; ^gattend to my cry!

Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit!

2  From your presence ^hlet my vindication come!

Let your eyes behold the right!

3  You have ⁱtried my heart, you have ^jvisited me by ^knight,

you have ^ltested me, and you will find nothing;

I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.

4  With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips

I have avoided the ways of the violent.

5  My steps have ^mheld fast to your paths;

my feet have not slipped.

6  I ⁿcall upon you, for you will answer me, O God;

^oincline your ear to me; hear my words.

7  ^pWondrously show¹ your steadfast love,

O Savior of those who seek refuge

from ^qtheir adversaries at your right hand.

8  Keep me as ^rthe apple of your eye;

hide me in ^sthe shadow of your wings,

9  from the wicked who do me violence,

my deadly enemies who ^tsurround me.

10  ^uThey close their hearts to pity;

with their mouths they ^vspeak arrogantly.

11  They have now surrounded our ^wsteps;

they set their eyes to ^xcast us to the ground.

12  He is like a lion eager to tear,

as a young lion ^ylurking in ambush.

13  Arise, O Lord! Confront him, subdue him!

Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword,

14  from men by your hand, O Lord,

from ^zmen of the world whose ^aportion is in this life.²

You fill their womb with treasure;³

they are satisfied with ^bchildren,

and they leave their abundance to their infants.

15  As for me, I shall ^cbehold your face in righteousness;

when I ^dawake, I shall be ^esatisfied with your likeness.

1  I will ^sextol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up

and have not let my foes ^trejoice over me.

2  O Lord my God, I ^ucried to you for help,

and you have ^vhealed me.

3  O Lord, you have brought up my soul from ^wSheol;

you restored me to life from among those who ^xgo down to the pit.¹

4  Sing praises to the Lord, O you ^yhis saints,

and ^zgive thanks to his holy name.²

5  ^aFor his anger is but for a moment,

and ^bhis favor is for a lifetime.³

^cWeeping may tarry for the night,

but ^djoy comes with the morning.

6  As for me, I said in my ^eprosperity,

“I shall never be ^fmoved.”

7  By your favor, O Lord,

you made my ^gmountain stand strong;

you ^hhid your face;

I was ⁱdismayed.

8  To you, O Lord, I cry,

and ^jto the Lord I plead for mercy:

9  “What profit is there in my death,⁴

if I go down to the pit?⁵

Will ^kthe dust praise you?

Will it tell of your faithfulness?

10  ^lHear, O Lord, and be merciful to me!

O Lord, be my helper!”

11  You have turned for me my mourning into ^mdancing;

you have loosed my sackcloth

and clothed me with gladness,

12  that my ⁿglory may sing your praise and not be silent.

O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

1  I ^acry aloud to God,

aloud to God, and he will hear me.

2  ^bIn the day of my trouble I seek the Lord;

in ^cthe night my ^dhand is stretched out without wearying;

my soul ^erefuses to be comforted.

3  When I remember God, I ^fmoan;

when I meditate, my spirit faints. Selah

4  You hold my eyelids open;

I am so ^gtroubled that I cannot speak.

5  I consider ^hthe days of old,

the years long ago.

6  I said,¹ “Let me remember my ⁱsong in the night;

let me ^jmeditate in my heart.”

Then my spirit made a diligent search:

7  “Will the Lord ^kspurn forever,

and never again ^lbe favorable?

8  Has his steadfast love forever ceased?

Are his ^mpromises at an end for all time?

9  ⁿHas God forgotten to be gracious?

^oHas he in anger shut up his compassion?” Selah

10  Then I said, “I will appeal to this,

to the years of the ^pright hand of the Most High.”²

11  I will remember the deeds of the Lord;

yes, I will ^qremember your wonders of old.

12  I will ponder all your ^rwork,

and meditate on your ^smighty deeds.

13  Your way, O God, is ^tholy.

^uWhat god is great like our God?

14  You are the God who ^vworks wonders;

you have ^wmade known your might among the peoples.

15  You ^xwith your arm redeemed your people,

the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah

16  When ^ythe waters saw you, O God,

when the waters saw you, they were afraid;

indeed, the deep trembled.

17  The clouds poured out water;

the skies ^zgave forth thunder;

your ^aarrows flashed on every side.

18  ^bThe crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind;

^cyour lightnings lighted up the world;

the earth ^dtrembled and shook.

19  Your ^eway was through the sea,

your path through the great waters;

yet your footprints ^fwere unseen.³

20  You ^gled your people like a flock

by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
