1  ⁱGive ear, O my people, to my teaching;

incline your ears to the words of my mouth!

2  ^jI will open my mouth ^kin a parable;

I will utter dark sayings from of old,

3  things that we have heard and known,

that our ^lfathers have told us.

4  We will not ^mhide them from their children,

but ⁿtell to the coming generation

the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,

and ^othe wonders that he has done.

5  He established ^pa testimony in ^qJacob

and appointed a law in ^qIsrael,

which he commanded our fathers

to teach to their children,

6  that ^rthe next generation might know them,

the children yet unborn,

and arise and tell them to their children,

7  so that they should set their hope in God

and not forget ^sthe works of God,

but ^tkeep his commandments;

8  and that they should not be ^ulike their fathers,

^va stubborn and rebellious generation,

a generation ^wwhose heart was not steadfast,

whose spirit was not faithful to God.

9  The Ephraimites, armed with² the bow,

^xturned back on the day of battle.

10  They ^ydid not keep God’s covenant,

but refused to walk according to his law.

11  They ^zforgot his works

and ^athe wonders that he had shown them.

12  In the sight of their fathers ^bhe performed wonders

in the land of Egypt, in ^cthe fields of Zoan.

13  He ^ddivided the sea and let them pass through it,

and made the waters ^estand like a heap.

14  ^fIn the daytime he led them with a cloud,

and all the night with a fiery light.

15  He ^gsplit rocks in the wilderness

and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.

16  He made streams come out of ^hthe rock

and caused waters to flow down like rivers.

17  Yet they sinned still more against him,

ⁱrebelling against the Most High in the desert.

18  They ^jtested God in their heart

by demanding the food they craved.

19  They spoke against God, saying,

^k“Can God ^lspread a table in the wilderness?

20  ^mHe struck the rock so that water gushed out

and streams overflowed.

Can he also give bread

or provide meat for his people?”

21  Therefore, when the Lord heard, he was full of wrath;

ⁿa fire was kindled against Jacob;

his anger rose against Israel,

22  because they ^odid not believe in God

and did not trust his saving power.

23  Yet he commanded the skies above

and ^popened the doors of heaven,

24  and he ^qrained down on them manna to eat

and gave them ^rthe grain of heaven.

25  Man ate of the bread of ^sthe angels;

he sent them food ^tin abundance.

26  He ^ucaused the east wind to blow in the heavens,

and by his power he led out the south wind;

27  he rained meat on them like ^vdust,

winged birds like ^wthe sand of the seas;

28  he ^xlet them fall in the midst of their camp,

all around their dwellings.

29  And they ^yate and were well filled,

for he gave them what they ^zcraved.

30  But before they had satisfied their craving,

^awhile the food was still in their mouths,

31  the anger of God rose against them,

and he killed ^bthe strongest of them

and laid low ^cthe young men of Israel.

32  In spite of all this, they ^dstill sinned;

^edespite his wonders, they did not believe.

33  So he made ^ftheir days ^gvanish like³ a breath,⁴

and their years in terror.

34  When he killed them, they ^hsought him;

they repented and sought God earnestly.

35  They remembered that God was their ⁱrock,

the Most High God their ^jredeemer.

36  But they ^kflattered him with their mouths;

they ^llied to him with their tongues.

37  Their ^mheart was not ⁿsteadfast toward him;

they were not faithful to his covenant.

38  Yet he, being ^ocompassionate,

^patoned for their iniquity

and did not destroy them;

he restrained his anger often

and did not stir up all his wrath.

39  He ^qremembered that they were but ^rflesh,

^sa wind that passes and comes not again.

40  How often they ^trebelled against him in the wilderness

and ^ugrieved him in ^vthe desert!

41  They ^wtested God again and again

and provoked ^xthe Holy One of Israel.

42  They ^ydid not remember his power⁵

or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,

43  ^zwhen he performed his ^asigns in Egypt

and his ^bmarvels in ^cthe fields of Zoan.

44  He ^dturned their rivers to blood,

so that they could not drink of their streams.

45  He sent among them swarms of ^eflies, which devoured them,

and ^ffrogs, which destroyed them.

46  He gave their crops to ^gthe destroying locust

and the fruit of their labor to the locust.

47  He destroyed their vines with ^hhail

and their sycamores with frost.

48  He gave over their ⁱcattle to the hail

and their flocks to thunderbolts.

49  He let loose on them his burning anger,

wrath, indignation, and distress,

a company of ^jdestroying angels.

50  He made a path for his anger;

he did not spare them from death,

but gave their lives over to the plague.

51  He struck down every ^kfirstborn in Egypt,

the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of ^lHam.

52  Then he led out his people ^mlike sheep

and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

53  ⁿHe led them in safety, so that they ^owere not afraid,

but ^pthe sea overwhelmed their enemies.

54  And he brought them to his ^qholy land,

^rto the mountain which his right hand had ^swon.

55  He ^tdrove out nations before them;

he ^uapportioned them for a possession

and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.

56  Yet they ^vtested and ^wrebelled against the Most High God

and did not keep his testimonies,

57  but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers;

they twisted like ^xa deceitful bow.

58  For they ^yprovoked him to anger with their ^zhigh places;

they ^amoved him to jealousy with their ^bidols.

59  When God heard, he was full of ^cwrath,

and he utterly rejected Israel.

60  He ^dforsook his dwelling at ^eShiloh,

the tent where he dwelt among mankind,

61  and delivered his ^fpower to captivity,

his ^gglory to the hand of the foe.

62  He ^hgave his people over to the sword

and ⁱvented his wrath on his heritage.

63  ^jFire devoured their young men,

and their young women had no ^kmarriage song.

64  Their ^lpriests fell by the sword,

and their ^mwidows made no lamentation.

65  Then the Lord ⁿawoke as from sleep,

like a strong man shouting because of wine.

66  And he ^oput his adversaries to rout;

he put them to everlasting shame.

67  He rejected the tent of ^pJoseph;

he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,

68  but he chose the tribe of Judah,

Mount Zion, which he ^qloves.

69  He ^rbuilt his sanctuary like the high heavens,

like the earth, which he has founded forever.

70  He ^schose David his servant

and took him from the sheepfolds;

71  from ^tfollowing the nursing ewes he brought him

to ^ushepherd Jacob his people,

Israel his ^vinheritance.

72  With ^wupright heart he shepherded them

and ^xguided them with his skillful hand.

1  ^tOh give thanks to the Lord; ^ucall upon his name;

^vmake known his deeds among the peoples!

2  Sing to him, sing praises to him;

^wtell of all his wondrous works!

3  Glory in his holy name;

let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!

4  Seek the Lord and his ^xstrength;

^yseek his presence continually!

5  Remember the ^zwondrous works that he has done,

his miracles, and ^athe judgments he uttered,

6  O offspring of ^bAbraham, his servant,

children of Jacob, his ^cchosen ones!

7  He is the Lord our God;

his ^djudgments are in all the earth.

8  He ^eremembers his covenant forever,

the word that he commanded, for ^fa thousand generations,

9  ^gthe covenant that he made with Abraham,

his ^hsworn promise to Isaac,

10  which he confirmed to ⁱJacob as a statute,

to Israel as an everlasting covenant,

11  saying, ^j“To you I will give the land of Canaan

as ^kyour portion for an inheritance.”

12  When they were ^lfew in number,

of little account, and ^msojourners in it,

13  wandering from nation to nation,

from one kingdom to another people,

14  he ⁿallowed no one to oppress them;

he ^orebuked kings on their account,

15  saying, ^p“Touch not my anointed ones,

do my prophets no harm!”

16  When he ^qsummoned a famine on the land

and ^rbroke all supply¹ of bread,

17  he had ^ssent a man ahead of them,

Joseph, who was ^tsold as a slave.

18  His ^ufeet were hurt with fetters;

his neck was put in a collar of iron;

19  until ^vwhat he had said came to pass,

the word of the Lord ^wtested him.

20  ^xThe king sent and ^yreleased him;

the ruler of the peoples set him free;

21  he ^zmade him lord of his house

and ruler of all his possessions,

22  to bind² his princes at his pleasure

and to teach his elders wisdom.

23  Then ^aIsrael came to Egypt;

Jacob ^bsojourned in ^cthe land of Ham.

24  And the Lord ^dmade his people very fruitful

and made them stronger than their foes.

25  He ^eturned their hearts to hate his people,

to ^fdeal craftily with his servants.

26  He ^gsent Moses, his servant,

and Aaron, ^hwhom he had chosen.

27  ⁱThey performed his signs among them

and miracles in ^cthe land of Ham.

28  He ^jsent darkness, and made the land dark;

they ^kdid not rebel³ against his words.

29  He turned their waters into blood

and ^lcaused their fish to die.

30  Their land swarmed with frogs,

even in ^mthe chambers of their kings.

31  He spoke, and there came ⁿswarms of flies,

^oand gnats throughout their country.

32  He gave them hail for rain,

and fiery ^plightning bolts through their land.

33  He struck down their vines and fig trees,

and ^qshattered the trees of their country.

34  He spoke, and the ^rlocusts came,

young locusts without number,

35  which devoured all the vegetation in their land

and ate up the fruit of their ground.

36  He ^sstruck down all the firstborn in their land,

^sthe firstfruits of all their strength.

37  Then he brought out Israel with ^tsilver and gold,

and there was none among his tribes who stumbled.

38  ^uEgypt was glad when they departed,

for ^vdread of them had fallen upon it.

39  He ^wspread a cloud for a covering,

and fire to give light by night.

40  ^xThey asked, and he ^ybrought quail,

and gave them ^zbread from heaven in abundance.

41  He opened the rock, and ^awater gushed out;

it flowed through ^bthe desert like a river.

42  For he ^cremembered his holy promise,

and ^dAbraham, his servant.

43  So he brought his people out with joy,

his ^dchosen ones with ^esinging.

44  And he ^fgave them the lands of the nations,

and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples’ toil,

45  that they might ^gkeep his statutes

and ^hobserve his laws.

1  ⁱPraise the Lord!

^jOh give thanks to the Lord, ^kfor he is good,

^lfor his steadfast love endures forever!

2  Who can utter the mighty deeds of the Lord,

or declare all his praise?

3  Blessed are they who observe justice,

who ^mdo righteousness at all times!

4  ⁿRemember me, O Lord, when you show favor to your people;

help me when you save them,⁴

5  that I may look upon the prosperity of your ^ochosen ones,

that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation,

that I may glory with your inheritance.

6  ^pBoth we and ^qour fathers have sinned;

we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness.

7  Our fathers, when they were in Egypt,

did not consider your wondrous works;

they ^rdid not remember the abundance of your steadfast love,

but ^srebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.

8  Yet he saved them ^tfor his name’s sake,

^uthat he might make known his mighty power.

9  He ^vrebuked the Red Sea, and it ^wbecame dry,

and he ^xled them through the deep as through a desert.

10  So he ^ysaved them from the hand of the foe

and ^zredeemed them from the power of the enemy.

11  And ^athe waters covered their adversaries;

not one of them was left.

12  Then ^bthey believed his words;

they ^csang his praise.

13  But they soon ^dforgot his works;

they did not wait for ^ehis counsel.

14  But they had ^fa wanton craving in the wilderness,

and ^gput God to the test in the desert;

15  he ^hgave them what they asked,

but sent ⁱa wasting disease among them.

16  When men in the camp ^jwere jealous of Moses

and Aaron, ^kthe holy one of the Lord,

17  ^lthe earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,

and covered the company of Abiram.

18  ^mFire also broke out in their company;

the flame burned up the wicked.

19  They ⁿmade a calf in Horeb

and worshiped a metal image.

20  They ^oexchanged the glory of God⁵

for the image of an ox that eats grass.

21  They ^pforgot God, their Savior,

who had done great things in Egypt,

22  wondrous works in ^qthe land of Ham,

and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.

23  Therefore ^rhe said he would destroy them—

had not Moses, his ^schosen one,

^tstood in the breach before him,

to turn away his wrath from destroying them.

24  Then they ^udespised ^vthe pleasant land,

having ^wno faith in his promise.

25  They ^xmurmured in their tents,

and did not obey the voice of the Lord.

26  Therefore he ^yraised his hand and swore to them

that he would make them fall in the wilderness,

27  and would make their offspring fall among the nations,

^zscattering them among the lands.

28  Then they ^ayoked themselves to the ^aBaal of Peor,

and ate sacrifices offered to ^bthe dead;

29  they provoked the Lord to anger with their deeds,

and a plague broke out among them.

30  Then ^cPhinehas stood up and intervened,

and the plague was stayed.

31  And that was ^dcounted to him as righteousness

from generation to generation forever.

32  They ^eangered him at the waters of Meribah,

and it went ill with Moses on their account,

33  for they ^fmade his spirit bitter,⁶

and he ^gspoke rashly with his lips.

34  They did not ^hdestroy the peoples,

ⁱas the Lord commanded them,

35  but they ^jmixed with the nations

and learned to do as they did.

36  They served their idols,

which became ^ka snare to them.

37  They ^lsacrificed their sons

and their daughters to ^mthe demons;

38  they poured out innocent blood,

the blood of their sons and daughters,

whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,

and the land was ⁿpolluted with blood.

39  Thus they ^obecame unclean by their acts,

and ^pplayed the whore in their deeds.

40  Then ^qthe anger of the Lord was kindled against ^rhis people,

and he abhorred his ^rheritage;

41  he ^sgave them into the hand of the nations,

so that those who hated them ruled over them.

42  Their enemies ^toppressed them,

and they were brought into subjection under their power.

43  ^uMany times he delivered them,

but they were rebellious in their ^vpurposes

and were ^wbrought low through their iniquity.

44  Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress,

when he ^xheard their cry.

45  For their sake he ^yremembered his covenant,

and ^zrelented according to ^athe abundance of his steadfast love.

46  He caused them to be ^bpitied

by all those who held them captive.

47  ^cSave us, O Lord our God,

and ^dgather us from among the nations,

that we may give thanks to your holy name

and glory in your praise.

48  ^eBlessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,

from everlasting to everlasting!

^eAnd let all the people say, “Amen!”
