Psalm 17:1–7

In the Shadow of Your Wings

A fPrayer of David.

Hear a just cause, O Lord; gattend to my cry!

Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit!

From your presence hlet my vindication come!

Let your eyes behold the right!

You have itried my heart, you have jvisited me by knight,

you have ltested me, and you will find nothing;

I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.

With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips

I have avoided the ways of the violent.

My steps have mheld fast to your paths;

my feet have not slipped.

I ncall upon you, for you will answer me, O God;

oincline your ear to me; hear my words.

pWondrously show1 your steadfast love,

O Savior of those who seek refuge

from qtheir adversaries at your right hand.

Psalm 17:15

15  As for me, I shall cbehold your face in righteousness;

when I dawake, I shall be esatisfied with your likeness.

Genesis 32:22–31

Jacob Wrestles with God

22 The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children,1 and crossed the ford of the fJabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and everything else that he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone. And ga man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, Let me go, for the day has broken. But Jacob said, hI will not let you go unless you bless me. 27 And he said to him, What is your name? And he said, Jacob. 28 Then he said, iYour name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel,2 for jyou have striven with God and kwith men, and have prevailed. 29 Then Jacob asked him, Please tell me your name. But he said, lWhy is it that you ask my name? And there he blessed him. 30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel,3 saying, For mI have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered. 31 The sun rose upon him as he passed nPenuel, limping because of his hip.

Matthew 14:13–21

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

13 Now when Jesus heard this, fhe withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When he went ashore he gsaw a great crowd, and ghe had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15 Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; hsend the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves. 16 But Jesus said, They need not go away; iyou give them something to eat. 17 They said to him, We have only five loaves here and two fish. 18 And he said, Bring them here to me. 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, jhe looked up to heaven and ksaid a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Romans 9:1–5

God’s Sovereign Choice

aI am speaking the truth in ChristI am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For bI could wish that I myself were caccursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers,1 my kinsmen daccording to the flesh. They are eIsraelites, and to them belong fthe adoption, gthe glory, hthe covenants, ithe giving of the law, jthe worship, and kthe promises. To them belong lthe patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, mwho is God over all, nblessed forever. Amen.
