Psalm 135

Your Name, O Lord, Endures Forever

1  Praise the Lord!

Praise the name of the Lord,

xgive praise, O servants of the Lord,

2  ywho stand in the house of the Lord,

in the courts of the house of our God!

3  Praise the Lord, zfor the Lord is good;

asing to his name, bfor it is pleasant!1

4  For the Lord has chosen Jacob for himself,

Israel as chis own possession.

5  For I know that dthe Lord is great,

and that our Lord is eabove all gods.

6  fWhatever the Lord pleases, he does,

in heaven and on earth,

in the seas and all deeps.

7  He it is who gmakes the clouds rise at the end of the earth,

who makes lightnings for the rain

and brings forth the wind from his storehouses.

8  hHe it was who struck down the firstborn of Egypt,

both of man and of beast;

9  who in your midst, O Egypt,

sent isigns and wonders

against Pharaoh and all his servants;

10  jwho struck down many nations

and killed mighty kings,

11  kSihon, king of the Amorites,

and lOg, king of Bashan,

and mall the kingdoms of Canaan,

12  and gave their land as a heritage,

a heritage to his people Israel.

13  nYour name, O Lord, endures forever,

your renown,2 O Lord, throughout all ages.

14  For othe Lord will vindicate his people

and have compassion on his servants.

15  pThe idols of the nations are silver and gold,

the work of human hands.

16  qThey have mouths, but do not speak;

they have eyes, but do not see;

17  they have ears, but do not hear,

rnor is there any breath in their mouths.

18  sThose who make them become like them;

so do all who trust in them.

19  O house of Israel, bless the Lord!

O house of Aaron, bless the Lord!

20  O house of Levi, bless the Lord!

You who fear the Lord, bless the Lord!

21  Blessed be the Lord from Zion,

he who dwells in Jerusalem!

Praise the Lord!

Numbers 13:1–2

Spies Sent into Canaan

1 zThe Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 a“Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel. From each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a chief among them.”

Numbers 13:17–33

17 Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, “Go up into the Negeb and go up into the hill country, 18 and see what the land is, and whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many, 19 and whether the land that they dwell in is good or bad, and whether the cities that they dwell in are camps or strongholds, 20 and whether the land is rich or poor, and whether there are trees in it or not. Be of good courage and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes.

21 So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near Lebo-hamath. 22 They went up into the Negeb and came to Hebron. cAhiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were there. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23 And they came to the dValley of Eshcol and cut down from there a branch with a single cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a pole between two of them; they also brought some pomegranates and figs. 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshcol,1 because of the cluster that the people of Israel cut down from there.

Report of the Spies

25 At the end of eforty days they returned from spying out the land. 26 And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of fParan, at gKadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, h“We came to the land to which you sent us. It iflows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 However, jthe people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And kthe Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.”

30 But Caleb lquieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” 31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for mthey are stronger than we are.” 32 So they nbrought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that odevours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of pgreat height. 33 And there we saw the qNephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”

Mark 5:21–43

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus’s Daughter

21 tAnd when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. 22 Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet 23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” 24 And he went with him.

And a great crowd followed him and uthronged about him. 25 And there was a woman who had had a vdischarge of blood for twelve years, 26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and wtouched his garment. 28 For she said, x“If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” 29 And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that ypower had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” 31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, zyour faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

35 aWhile he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. bWhy trouble the Teacher any further?” 36 But overhearing1 what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37 And he allowed no one to follow him except cPeter and James and John the brother of James. 38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus2 saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And when he had entered, he said to them, d“Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is enot dead but sleeping.” 40 And they laughed at him. But he put them all foutside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. 41 gTaking her by the hand he said to her, h“Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. 43 And he strictly charged them that ino one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.
