Psalm 125

The Lord Surrounds His People

A Song of mAscents.

Those who ftrust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,

which gcannot be moved, but abides forever.

As the mountains surround Jerusalem,

so hthe Lord surrounds his people,

from this time forth and forevermore.

For ithe scepter of wickedness shall not jrest

on kthe land allotted to the righteous,

lest the righteous lstretch out

their hands to do wrong.

mDo good, O Lord, to those who are good,

and to those who are nupright in their hearts!

But those who oturn aside to their pcrooked ways

the Lord will lead away with qevildoers!

rPeace be upon Israel!


Proverbs 22:1–2

pA good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,

and favor is better than silver or gold.

qThe rich and the poor meet together;

the Lord is rthe Maker of them all.


Proverbs 22:8–9

Whoever ysows injustice will reap calamity,

and zthe rod of his fury will fail.

aWhoever has a bountiful1 eye will be blessed,

for he bshares his bread with the poor.


Proverbs 22:22–23

22  uDo not rob the poor, because he is poor,

or vcrush the afflicted at wthe gate,

23  for xthe Lord will plead their cause

and rob of life those who rob them.


Mark 7:24–37

The Syrophoenician Woman’s Faith

24 And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon.1 And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden. 25 But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet. 26 tNow the woman was a uGentile, va Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 And he said to her, Let the children be wfed first, for it is not right to take the children’s bread and xthrow it to the dogs. 28 But she answered him, Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s ycrumbs. 29 And he said to her, For this statement you may zgo your way; the demon has left your daughter. 30 And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.

Jesus Heals a Deaf Man

31 aThen he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to bthe Sea of Galilee, in the region of the cDecapolis. 32 And they brought to him da man who was deaf and dhad a speech impediment, and they begged him to elay his hand on him. 33 And ftaking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and fafter spitting touched his tongue. 34 And glooking up to heaven, hhe sighed and said to him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. 35 dAnd his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. 36 And iJesus2 charged them to tell no one. But jthe more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. 37 And they were kastonished beyond measure, saying, He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.


James 2:1–17

The Sin of Partiality

My brothers,1 wshow no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, xthe Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, You sit here in a good place, ywhile you say to the poor man, You stand over there, or, Sit down at my feet, have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become zjudges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers, ahas not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be brich in faith and heirs of cthe kingdom, dwhich he has promised to those who love him? But you ehave dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who fdrag you ginto court? Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable hname by which you were called?

If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, iYou shall love your neighbor as yourself, you are doing well. But if you jshow partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point khas become guilty of all of it. 11 For he who said, lDo not commit adultery, also said, lDo not murder. If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under mthe law of liberty. 13 For njudgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Faith Without Works Is Dead

14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith obut does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 pIf a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 qand one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warmed and filled, without giving them the things needed for the body, what good2 is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
