The Lord Accepts Aaron’s Offering

1 ^rOn the eighth day Moses called Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel, 2 and he said to Aaron, ^s“Take for yourself a bull calf for a sin offering and ^ta ram for a burnt offering, both without blemish, and offer them before the Lord. 3 And say to the people of Israel, ^u‘Take a male goat for a sin offering, and a calf and a lamb, both a year old without blemish, for a burnt offering, 4 and an ox and a ram for peace offerings, to sacrifice before the Lord, and ^va grain offering mixed with oil, for ^wtoday the Lord will appear to you.’” 5 And they brought what Moses commanded in front of the tent of meeting, and all the congregation drew near and stood before the Lord. 6 And Moses said, “This is the thing that the Lord commanded you to do, that the glory of the Lord may appear to you.” 7 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Draw near to the altar and ^xoffer your sin offering and your burnt offering and ^ymake atonement for yourself and for the people, and bring the offering of the people and make atonement for them, as the Lord has commanded.”

8 So Aaron drew near to the altar and killed the calf of the sin offering, which was for himself. 9 ^zAnd the sons of Aaron presented the blood to him, and he dipped his finger in the blood and ^aput it on the horns of the altar and poured out the blood at the base of the altar. 10 ^bBut the fat and the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver from the sin offering he burned on the altar, ^cas the Lord commanded Moses. 11 ^dThe flesh and the skin he burned up with fire outside the camp.

12 Then he killed the burnt offering, and Aaron’s sons handed him the blood, and he ^ethrew it against the sides of the altar. 13 ^fAnd they handed the burnt offering to him, piece by piece, and the head, and he burned them on the altar. 14 ^gAnd he washed the entrails and the legs and burned them with the burnt offering on the altar.

15 ^hThen he presented the people’s offering and took the goat of the sin offering that was for the people and killed it and ⁱoffered it as a sin offering, ^jlike the first one. 16 And he presented the burnt offering and offered it ^kaccording to the ^lrule. 17 And he presented the ^mgrain offering, took a handful of it, and burned it on the altar, ⁿbesides the burnt offering of the morning.

18 Then he killed the ox and the ram, ^othe sacrifice of peace offerings for the people. And Aaron’s sons handed him the blood, and he threw it against the sides of the altar. 19 But the fat pieces of the ox and of the ram, the fat tail and that which covers ^pthe entrails and the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver— 20 they put the fat pieces on the breasts, ^qand he burned the fat pieces on the altar, 21 but the breasts and the right thigh Aaron waved ^rfor a wave offering before the Lord, as Moses commanded.

22 Then Aaron ^slifted up his hands toward the people and ^tblessed them, and he came down from offering the sin offering and the burnt offering and the peace offerings. 23 And Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting, and when they came out they blessed the people, and ^uthe glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. 24 And ^vfire came out from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the pieces of fat on the altar, and when all the people saw it, ^wthey shouted and ^xfell on their faces.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

18 ^jNow it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” 19 And they answered, ^k“John the Baptist. But others say, ^lElijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.” 20 Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, ^m“The Christ of God.”

Jesus Foretells His Death

21 ⁿAnd he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, 22 ^osaying, ^p“The Son of Man must ^qsuffer many things and ^rbe rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on ^sthe third day be raised.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him ^tdeny himself and ^utake up his cross ^vdaily and follow me. 24 For ^uwhoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 ^wFor what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26 For ^xwhoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed ^ywhen he comes in ^zhis glory and the glory of the Father and of ^athe holy angels. 27 But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not ^btaste death ^cuntil they see the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration

28 ^dNow about eight days after these sayings he took with him ^ePeter and John and James and ^fwent up on the mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was ^galtered, and ^hhis clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure,¹ which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and those who were with him ⁱwere heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake ^jthey saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three ^ktents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—^lnot knowing what he said. 34 As he was saying these things, ^ma cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And ^ma voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, ⁿmy Chosen One;^{2 o}listen to him!” 36 And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. ^pAnd they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.
