Psalm 113

Who Is like the Lord Our God?

1  Praise the Lord!

zPraise, O servants of the Lord,

praise the name of the Lord!

2  aBlessed be the name of the Lord

bfrom this time forth and forevermore!

3  cFrom the rising of the sun to its setting,

the name of the Lord is to be praised!

4  The Lord is high dabove all nations,

and ehis glory above the heavens!

5  fWho is like the Lord our God,

who is seated on high,

6  who looks far down

on the heavens and the earth?

7  gHe raises the poor from the dust

and lifts the needy from the ash heap,

8  to make them sit with princes,

with the princes of his people.

9  hHe gives the barren woman a home,

imaking her the joyous mother of children.

Praise the Lord!

Psalm 114

Tremble at the Presence of the Lord

1  jWhen Israel went out from Egypt,

the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,

2  kJudah became his sanctuary,

Israel his dominion.

3  lThe sea looked and fled;

mJordan turned back.

4  The mountains nskipped like rams,

the hills like lambs.

5  What ails you, O sea, that you flee?

O Jordan, that you turn back?

6  O mountains, that you skip like rams?

O hills, like lambs?

7  oTremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,

at the presence of the God of Jacob,

8  pwho turns the rock into a pool of water,

the qflint into a spring of water.

Exodus 14:5–31

5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, nthe mind of Pharaoh and his servants was changed toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?” 6 So he made ready his chariot and took his army with him, 7 and took six hundred chosen chariots and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them. 8 And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the people of Israel while the people of Israel were going out odefiantly. 9 The Egyptians pursued them, all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and his horsemen and his army, and overtook them encamped at the sea, by Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon.

10 pWhen Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. qAnd the people of Israel cried out to the Lord. 11 rThey said to Moses, s“Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Is not this twhat we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may userve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” 13 And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, vstand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. 14 wThe Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”

15 The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward. 16 xLift up your staff, and ystretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that zthe people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground. 17 And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they shall go in after them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, his chariots, and his horsemen. 18 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gotten glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.”

19 Then athe angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and bthe pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them, 20 coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness. And it lit up the night1 without one coming near the other all night.

21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and cthe Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 dAnd the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 23 The Egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. 24 And in the morning watch the Lord in the pillar of fire and of cloud looked down on the Egyptian forces and threw the Egyptian forces into a panic, 25 clogging2 their chariot wheels so that they drove heavily. And the Egyptians said, “Let us flee from before Israel, for the Lord fights for them against the Egyptians.”

26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, ethat the water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.” 27 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its normal course when the morning appeared. And as the Egyptians fled into it, the Lord threw3 the Egyptians into the midst of the sea. 28 The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen; of all the host of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea, fnot one of them remained. 29 But the people of Israel walked on dry ground through the sea, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

30 Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 Israel gsaw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses.

John 20:11–23

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

11 rBut Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw stwo angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, tbut she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? uWhom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic,1 “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

19 vOn the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were wfor fear of the Jews,2 Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, x“Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he yshowed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples zwere glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. aAs the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, b“Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 cIf you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”
