12  For it is not an enemy who taunts me

then I could bear it;

it is not an adversary who tdeals insolently with me

then I could hide from him.

13  uBut it is you, a man, my equal,

my companion, my familiar friend.

20  My companion1 estretched out his hand against his friends;

he violated his covenant.

13  He has put my hbrothers far from me,

and ithose who knew me are wholly estranged from me.

14  My relatives jhave failed me,

my close kfriends have forgotten me.

19  All my pintimate friends abhor me,

and those whom I loved have turned against me.

rLet everyone beware of his neighbor,

and put no trust in any brother,

for every sbrother is a deceiver,

and every neighbor tgoes about as a slanderer.

10  bFor I hear many whispering.

cTerror is on every side!

Denounce him! dLet us denounce him!

say all my eclose friends,

fwatching for gmy fall.

Perhaps he will be deceived;

then hwe can overcome him

and take our revenge on him.

gPut no trust in a neighbor;

have no confidence in a friend;

guard hthe doors of your mouth

from her who lies in your arms;1
