5  He who ^lgathers in summer is a prudent son,

but he who sleeps in harvest is ^ma son who brings shame.

24  ^cWhoever spares the rod hates his son,

but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.¹

5  ^kA fool ^ldespises his father’s instruction,

but ^mwhoever heeds reproof is prudent.

20  ^kA wise son makes a glad father,

but a foolish man despises his mother.

18  ^fDiscipline your son, for there is hope;

do not set your heart on ^gputting him to death.

20  ^gIf one curses his father or his mother,

^hhis lamp will be put out in utter darkness.

6  ^wTrain up a child in the way he should go;

even when he is old he will not depart from it.

15  Folly is bound up in the heart of a child,

but ⁿthe rod of discipline drives it far from him.

22  ^cListen to your father who gave you life,

^dand do not despise your mother when she is old.

23  ^eBuy truth, and do not sell it;

buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.

26  My son, give me your heart,

and let your eyes observe¹ my ways.

15  ^vThe rod and reproof give wisdom,

but a child left to himself ^wbrings shame to his mother.

17  ^yDiscipline your son, and he will give you rest;

he will give delight to your heart.
