8  Hear, my son, your ^mfather’s ⁿinstruction,

and ^oforsake not ^pyour mother’s teaching,

1  Hear, O sons, a father’s ^rinstruction,

and be attentive, that you may gain¹ insight,

24  ^vWhoever spares the rod hates his son,

^wbut he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.¹

5  A fool ^edespises his father’s ^finstruction,

but whoever ^gheeds reproof is prudent.

18  ^wDiscipline your son, for there is hope;

^xdo not set your heart on putting him to death.

15  ^pFolly is bound up in the heart of a child,

but the rod of ^qdiscipline drives it far from him.

13  ⁱDo not withhold discipline from a child;

if you strike him with a rod, he will not die.

17  ⁱDiscipline your son, and he will give you rest;

he will give delight to your heart.
