1 While Israel lived in eShittim, fthe people began to whore with the daughters of Moab.
Rahab Hides the Spies
1 And Joshua the son of Nun xsent1 two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of ya prostitute whose name was zRahab and lodged there.
49 they camped by the Jordan from Beth-jeshimoth as far as rAbel-shittim in the plains of Moab.
5 O my people, remember ywhat Balak king of Moab devised,
and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him,
and what happened from zShittim to Gilgal,
that you may know athe righteous acts of the Lord.”
The Indictment of the Lord
1 qHear what the Lord says:
Arise, plead your case before the mountains,
and let the hills hear your voice.
8 lWe must not indulge in sexual immorality mas some of them did, and ntwenty-three thousand fell in a single day.
Israel Crosses the Jordan
1 Then Joshua rose early in the morning and they set out tfrom Shittim. And they came to the Jordan, he and all the people of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over.
15 Moses said to them, “Have you zlet all the women live? 16 Behold, athese, bon Balaam’s advice, caused the people of Israel to act treacherously against the Lord in the incident of cPeor, and so dthe plague came among the congregation of the Lord.
26 And I find something more qbitter than death: rthe woman whose heart is ssnares and nets, and whose hands are fetters. He who pleases God escapes her, but tthe sinner is taken by her.
14 But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of iBalaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might jeat food sacrificed to idols and kpractice sexual immorality.
