Nehemiah 3:1–5

Rebuilding the Wall

1 Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brothers the priests, and they built the Sheep Gate. They consecrated it and set its doors. They consecrated it as far as the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Tower of Hananel. 2 And next to him the men of Jericho built. And next to them1 Zaccur the son of Imri built.

3 The sons of Hassenaah built the Fish Gate. They laid its beams and set its doors, its bolts, and its bars. 4 And next to them Meremoth the son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz repaired. And next to them Meshullam the son of Berechiah, son of Meshezabel repaired. And next to them Zadok the son of Baana repaired. 5 And next to them the Tekoites repaired, but their nobles would not stoop to serve their Lord.2

Psalm 40:1–11

My Help and My Deliverer

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

1  I waited patiently for the Lord;

he inclined to me and heard my cry.

2  He drew me up from the pit of destruction,

out of the ymiry bog,

and set my feet zupon a rock,

making my steps secure.

3  He put a new song in my mouth,

a song of praise to our God.

Many will see and fear,

and put their trust in the Lord.

4  Blessed is the man who makes

the Lord his atrust,

who does not turn to the proud,

to those who go astray after a lie!

5  You have multiplied, O Lord my God,

your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us;

none can compare with you!

I will proclaim and tell of them,

yet bthey are more than can be told.

6  cIn sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,

but you have given me an open ear.1

Burnt offering and sin offering

you have not required.

7  Then I said, “Behold, I have come;

in the scroll of the book it is written of me:

8  I ddelight to do your will, O my God;

your law is within my heart.”

9  I have told the glad news of deliverance2

in the great congregation;

behold, I have not restrained my lips,

as you know, O Lord.

10  I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart;

I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;

I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness

from the great congregation.

11  As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain

your mercy from me;

your esteadfast love and your faithfulness will

ever preserve me!

John 1:35–42

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

35 yThe next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, z“Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.1 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus2 was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the aMessiah” (which means bChrist). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. cYou shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter3).
