1 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are isome standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”
The Transfiguration
2 jAnd after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And khe was ltransfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became mradiant, intensely white, as no one1 on earth could bleach them. 4 nAnd there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 And Peter said to Jesus, o“Rabbi,2 it is good that we are here. Let us make three ptents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 And a qcloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, r“This is my beloved Son;3 slisten to him.” 8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.
9 tAnd as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to utell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning vwhat this rising from the dead might mean. 11 And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that wfirst Elijah must come?” 12 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it xwritten of the Son of Man ythat he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him zwhatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”
Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit
14 aAnd when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. 15 And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. 16 And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” 17 And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him bmute. 18 And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your cdisciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” 19 And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” 20 And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it dconvulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21 And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 And Jesus said to him, e“‘If you can’! fAll things are possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out4 and said, “I believe; ghelp my unbelief!” 25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he hrebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I icommand you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him jprivately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29 And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but kprayer.”5
Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection
30 lThey went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he did not want anyone to know, 31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after mthree days he will rise.” 32 But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.
Who Is the Greatest?
33 nAnd they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, o“If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 p“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”
Anyone Not Against Us Is for Us
38 qJohn said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name,6 and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 rFor the one who is not against us is for us. 41 For truly, I say to you, swhoever gives you a cup of water to drink because7 you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.
Temptations to Sin
42 t“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,8 uit would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 vAnd if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell,9 to the unquenchable fire.10 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to wenter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, 48 x‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ 49 yFor everyone will be salted with fire.11 50 Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? zHave salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
He Will Not Forsake His Saints
1 Of David.
1 xFret not yourself because of evildoers;
be not yenvious of wrongdoers!
2 For they will soon fade zlike the grass
and wither like the green herb.
3 aTrust in the Lord, and bdo good;
dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.2
4 cDelight yourself in the Lord,
and he will dgive you the desires of your heart.
5 eCommit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act.
6 He will bring forth your righteousness fas the light,
and your justice as the gnoonday.
7 hBe still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,
over the man who carries out evil devices!
8 iRefrain from anger, and forsake wrath!
Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
9 For the evildoers shall be cut off,
but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.
10 In just a little while, the wicked will be no more;
jthough you look carefully at his place, he will not be there.
11 But kthe meek shall inherit the land
and delight themselves in abundant peace.
12 The wicked plots against the righteous
and gnashes his teeth at him,
13 but the Lord llaughs at the wicked,
for he sees that his day is coming.
14 The wicked draw the sword and bend their bows
to bring down the poor and needy,
to slay those whose way is upright;
15 their sword shall enter their own heart,
and their bows shall be broken.
16 mBetter is the little that the righteous has
than the abundance of many wicked.
17 For the arms of the wicked shall be nbroken,
but the Lord upholds the righteous.
18 The Lord knows the days of the blameless,
and their heritage will remain forever;
19 they are not put to shame in evil times;
oin the days of famine they have abundance.
20 But the wicked will perish;
the enemies of the Lord are like the glory of the pastures;
they vanish—like psmoke they vanish away.
21 The wicked borrows but does not pay back,
but the righteous is generous and gives;
22 for those blessed by the Lord3 shall inherit the land,
but those cursed by him shall be cut off.
23 qThe steps of a man are established by the Lord,
when he rdelights in his way;
24 sthough he fall, he shall not be cast headlong,
for the Lord upholds his hand.
25 I have been young, and now am old,
yet tI have not seen the righteous forsaken
or his children begging for bread.
26 He is ever ulending generously,
and his children become a blessing.
27 vTurn away from evil and do good;
so shall you dwell forever.
28 For the Lord loves justice;
he will not forsake his saints.
They are preserved forever,
but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.
29 The righteous shall inherit the land
and dwell upon it forever.
30 wThe mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,
and his tongue speaks justice.
31 The law of his God is in his heart;
his steps do not xslip.
32 The wicked watches for the righteous
and seeks to put him to death.
33 The Lord will not abandon him to his power
or let him be condemned when he is brought to trial.
34 Wait for the Lord and keep his way,
and he will exalt you to inherit the land;
yyou will look on when the wicked are cut off.
35 zI have seen a wicked, ruthless man,
spreading himself like a green laurel tree.4
36 aBut he passed away,5 and behold, he was no more;
though I sought him, he could not be found.
37 Mark the blameless and behold the upright,
for there is a future for the man of peace.
38 But transgressors shall be altogether destroyed;
the future of the wicked shall be cut off.
39 The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
he is their stronghold in the time of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them and delivers them;
he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because they take refuge in him.
