The Triumphal Entry
1 oNow when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus1 sent two of his disciples 2 and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. 3 If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The pLord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’” 4 And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. 5 And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6 And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. 7 And they brought qthe colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. 8 And many rspread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. 9 And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, s“Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the tcoming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!”
11 And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.
Jesus Curses the Fig Tree
12 uOn the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry. 13 And seeing in the distance a vfig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.
Jesus Cleanses the Temple
15 wAnd they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the xmoney-changers and the seats of those who sold ypigeons. 16 And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. 17 And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, z‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a aden of robbers.” 18 And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way bto destroy him, for they feared him, because all the crowd was castonished at his teaching. 19 And when evening came they2 went out of the city.
The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree
20 dAs they passed by in the morning, they saw the efig tree withered away to its roots. 21 And Peter remembered and said to him, f“Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” 22 And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. 23 Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, gwhatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received3 it, and it will be yours. 25 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, hif you have anything against anyone, iso that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”4
The Authority of Jesus Challenged
27 jAnd they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, 28 and they said to him, “By what kauthority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?” 29 Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man? Answer me.” 31 And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why then did you lnot believe him?’ 32 But shall we say, ‘From man’?”—they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was a mprophet. 33 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
The Parable of the Tenants
1 nAnd he began to speak to them in parables. o“A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and leased it to tenants and pwent into another country. 2 When the season came, he sent a servant5 to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. 3 And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4 Again he sent to them another servant, and they struck him on the head and treated him shamefully. 5 And he sent another, and him they qkilled. And so with many others: some they beat, and some they killed. 6 He had still one other, a rbeloved son. sFinally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 7 But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the their. Come, let us ukill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8 And they took him and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard. 9 What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and vgive the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not read this Scripture:
w“‘The stone that the builders rejected
11 this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”
12 And they were seeking to arrest him but feared the people, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away.
Paying Taxes to Caesar
13 yAnd they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, zto trap him in his talk. 14 And they came and said to him, “Teacher, awe know that you are true and do not care about anyone’s opinion. For byou are not swayed by cappearances,7 but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay dtaxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” 15 But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius8 and let me look at it.” 16 And they brought one. And he said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar’s.” 17 Jesus said to them, e“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at him.
The Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection
18 fAnd Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no gresurrection. And they asked him a question, saying, 19 “Teacher, hMoses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man9 must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 20 There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no offspring. 21 And the second took her, and died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. 22 And the seven left no offspring. Last of all the woman also died. 23 In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.”
24 Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God? 25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 26 And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, iin the passage about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, j‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? 27 He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are quite wrong.”
The Great Commandment
28 kAnd one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, l‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall mlove the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: n‘You shall olove your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said pthat qhe is one, and there is no other besides him. 33 And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is much rmore than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions.
Whose Son Is the Christ?
35 sAnd as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the tson of David? 36 David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared,
u“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet.”’
37 David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.
Beware of the Scribes
38 vAnd in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like wgreetings in the marketplaces 39 and have the xbest seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 40 who ydevour widows’ houses and for a zpretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
The Widow’s Offering
41 aAnd he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the boffering box. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny.10 43 And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple
1 cAnd as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” 2 And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will dnot be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
Signs of the End of the Age
3 eAnd as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” 5 And Jesus began to say to them, “See that no one leads you astray. 6 Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. 7 And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but fthe end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.
9 g“But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to hcouncils, and you will be beaten in isynagogues, and you will stand before jgovernors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them. 10 And the gospel must first be kproclaimed to all nations. 11 And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, ldo not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the mHoly Spirit. 12 And nbrother will deliver brother over to odeath, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. 13 And you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. pBut the one who endures to the end will be saved.
The Abomination of Desolation
14 q“But when you see rthe abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee sto the mountains. 15 tLet the one who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything out, 16 and ulet the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 17 And valas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 18 Pray that it may not happen in winter. 19 For in those days there will be such wtribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be. 20 And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days. 21 xAnd then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. 22 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform ysigns and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23 But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand.
The Coming of the Son of Man
24 z“But in those days, after that tribulation, athe sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the bstars will be falling from heaven, and the cpowers in the heavens will be shaken. 26 And then they will see the Son of Man dcoming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
The Lesson of the Fig Tree
28 e“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is fnear, at the very gates. 30 Truly, I say to you, gthis generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
No One Knows That Day or Hour
32 h“But concerning that day or that hour, ino one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard, jkeep awake.11 For you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man kgoing on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants12 in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. 35 Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows,13 or in the morning— 36 lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
1 lIt was now two days before the mPassover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and nkill him, 2 for they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people.”
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
3 oAnd while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,14 as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. 4 There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? 5 For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred pdenarii15 and given to the poor.” And they scolded her. 6 But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 For qyou always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. 8 She has done what she could; she has ranointed my body beforehand for burial. 9 And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.”
Judas to Betray Jesus
10 sThen Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. 11 And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to betray him.
The Passover with the Disciples
12 tAnd on the ufirst day of Unleavened Bread, when they vsacrificed the wPassover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 13 And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, x“Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, 14 and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The yTeacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.” 16 And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
17 zAnd when it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, aone of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” 19 They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” 20 He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. 21 For the Son of Man goes bas it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is cbetrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”
Institution of the Lord’s Supper
22 dAnd as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; ethis is my body.” 23 And he took a fcup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, g“This is my hblood of the16 covenant, which is poured out ifor many. 25 Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
26 jAnd when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 27 And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, k‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 But after I am raised up, I will lgo before you to Galilee.” 29 Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.” 30 And Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, mbefore the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” 31 But he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
32 nAnd they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34 And he said to them, o“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.”17 35 And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, pthe hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, q“Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” 37 And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? 38 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. rThe spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him. 41 And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is sbetrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 tRise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”
Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
43 uAnd immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” 45 And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, v“Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 46 And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the wservant18 of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” 50 And they all left him and fled.
A Young Man Flees
51 And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.
Jesus Before the Council
53 xAnd they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. 54 And Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council19 were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. 56 For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony ydid not agree. 57 And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will zdestroy this atemple that is made with hands, and in bthree days I will build another, not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”20 61 But he remained csilent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, d“Are you ethe Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, f“I am, and you will see gthe Son of Man hseated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64 You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as ideserving death. 65 And some began to jspit on him and to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him with blows.
Peter Denies Jesus
66 kAnd as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, 67 and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway21 and the rooster crowed.22 69 And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” 70 But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” 71 But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.” 72 And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter lremembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.23
Mary Anoints Jesus at Bethany
1 aSix days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, bwhere Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they gave a dinner for him there. cMartha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. 3 Mary therefore took a pound1 of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, 5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred ddenarii2 and egiven to the poor?” 6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. 7 Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it3 ffor the day of my burial. 8 For gthe poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”
The Plot to Kill Lazarus
9 When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus4 was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death has well, 11 because on account of him imany of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.
The Triumphal Entry
12 jThe next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of kpalm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, l“Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the mKing of Israel!” 14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
15 n“Fear not, daughter of Zion;
behold, your king is coming,
sitting on a donkey’s colt!”
16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was oglorified, then they premembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. 17 qThe crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, rthe world has gone after him.”
Some Greeks Seek Jesus
20 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some sGreeks. 21 So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, t“The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, uunless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it vbears much fruit. 25 wWhoever loves his life loses it, and whoever xhates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must yfollow me; and zwhere I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
The Son of Man Must Be Lifted Up
27 a“Now is my soul btroubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, csave me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a dvoice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29 eThe crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. fOthers said, g“An angel has spoken to him.” 30 Jesus answered, “This voice has come hfor your sake, not mine. 31 Now is ithe judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. 32 And I, when I am jlifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33 kHe said this lto show by what kind of death he was going to die. 34 So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains mforever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” 35 So Jesus said to them, “The nlight is among you ofor a little while longer. Walk pwhile you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who qwalks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become rsons of light.”
The Unbelief of the People
When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. 37 sThough he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, 38 so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be tfulfilled:
u“Lord, who has believed what he heard from us,
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39 Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said,
40 v“He has blinded their eyes
and whardened their heart,
lest they see with their eyes,
and understand with their heart, and turn,
and I would heal them.”
41 Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. 42 Nevertheless, many even of xthe authorities believed in him, but yfor fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be zput out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the aglory that comes from God.
Jesus Came to Save the World
44 And Jesus cried out and said, b“Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. 45 And cwhoever sees me sees him who sent me. 46 I have come into the world as dlight, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, eI do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but fto save the world. 48 The one who grejects me and hdoes not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. 49 For I have not ispoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—jwhat to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. kWhat I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”
Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that lhis hour had come mto depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when the devil had already nput it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given oall things into his hands, and pthat he had come from God and qwas going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to rwash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but safterward you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet,5 but is completely clean. And tyou6 are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 For he uknew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an vexample, that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, wa servant7 is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, xblessed are you if you do them. 18 I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have ychosen. But the Scripture will be zfulfilled,8 a‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19 I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, bwhoever receives the one I send creceives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
One of You Will Betray Me
21 dAfter saying these things, Jesus was etroubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will fbetray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 One of his disciples, gwhom Jesus loved, was reclining at table hat Jesus’ side,9 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus10 of whom he was speaking. 25 iSo that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, jSatan entered into him. Jesus said to him, k“What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, lbecause Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.
A New Commandment
31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man mglorified, and nGod is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. 33 Little children, oyet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and pjust as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 qA new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have rlove for one another.”
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
36 sSimon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but tyou will follow afterward.” 37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the urooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.
I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life
1 v“Let not your hearts be troubled. wBelieve in God;11 xbelieve also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?12 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, yI will come again and will take you to myself, that zwhere I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.”13 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, a“I am the way, and the truth, and the blife. cNo one comes to the Father dexcept through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have eknown my Father also.14 fFrom now on you do know him and have gseen him.”
8 Philip said to him, “Lord, hshow us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? iWhoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that jI am in the Father and the Father is in me? kThe words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, lor else believe on account of the works themselves.
12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and mgreater works than these will he do, because nI am going to the Father. 13 oWhatever you ask in my name, this I will do, pthat the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me15 anything in my name, I will do it.
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
15 q“If you rlove me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will sgive you another tHelper,16 to be with you forever, 17 even the uSpirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be17 in you.
18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 vYet a little while and wthe world will see me no more, but you will see me. xBecause I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and yyou in me, and zI in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And ahe who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will bkeep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our chome with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.
25 “These things I have spoken to you dwhile I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, ehe will teach you all things and bring to your fremembrance all that I have said to you. 27 gPeace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. hLet not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, i‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is jgreater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for kthe ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, 31 but I do as the Father has lcommanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. mRise, let us go from here.
I Am the True Vine
1 n“I am the true ovine, pand my Father is the vinedresser. 2 qEvery branch in me rthat does not sbear fruit the takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already uyou are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 vAbide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, wunless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and xthe branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words yabide in you, zask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 aBy this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so bprove to be my disciples. 9 cAs dthe Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 eIf you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s fcommandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and gthat your joy may be full.
12 h“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 iGreater love has no one than this, that someone jlay down his life for his friends. 14 kYou are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants,18 for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for lall that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but mI chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.
The Hatred of the World
18 “If the world nhates you, know that it has ohated me before it hated you. 19 If you were pof the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are qnot of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: r‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they spersecuted me, tthey will also persecute you. If they ukept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But vall these things they will do to you won account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. 22 xIf I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin,19 but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 yWhoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But the word that is written in their Law must be zfulfilled: a‘They hated me without a cause.’
26 “But when the bHelper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the cSpirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will dbear witness about me. 27 And you also will ebear witness, fbecause you have been with me from the beginning.
1 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. 2 They will gput you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you hwill think he is offering service to God. 3 And ithey will do these things because they have not jknown the Father, nor me. 4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may kremember that I told them to you.
The Work of the Holy Spirit
“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now lI am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, m‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, nsorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for oif I do not go away, the pHelper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I qgo to the Father, and ryou will see me no longer; 11 concerning sjudgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the tSpirit of truth comes, uhe will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 vAll that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy
16 w“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So xsome of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but yyour sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts zwill rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, awhatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. bAsk, and you will receive, cthat your joy may be full.
I Have Overcome the World
25 “I have said these things to you in dfigures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father himself loves you, ebecause you have loved me and have believed that I came ffrom God.20 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am gleaving the world and going to the Father.”
29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that hyou know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when iyou will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am jnot alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have kpeace. lIn the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have movercome the world.”
The High Priestly Prayer
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, nthe hour has come; oglorify your Son pthat the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over qall flesh, to give eternal life to rall whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they sknow you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth, having taccomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you ubefore the world existed.
6 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. 8 For I have given them vthe words that you gave me, and they have wreceived them and have come to know in truth that I came xfrom you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yyours are mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and zI am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, athat they may be one, even as bwe are one. 12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and cnot one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be dfulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, ethat they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has fhated them because they are gnot of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you htake them out of the world, but that you ikeep them from the evil one.21 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 jSanctify them22 in the truth; your word is truth. 18 kAs you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself,23 that they also may be sanctified24 in truth.
20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will lbelieve in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as myou, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one neven as we are one, 23 oI in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and ploved them even as you qloved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me rwhere I am, to see my sglory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, tI know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 uI made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, vthat the love with which you have loved me may be win them, and I in them.”
