The Beatitudes
20 dAnd he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said:
“Blessed are you who are epoor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
21 “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be fsatisfied.
“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
22 “Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! 23 Rejoice in that day, and gleap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the hprophets.
Jesus Pronounces Woes
24 “But iwoe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
25 “Woe to you who are full now, for jyou shall be hungry.
“Woe to you who klaugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.
26 “Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for lso their fathers did to the false prophets.
14 And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the zcares and ariches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.
The Parable of the Rich Fool
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all icovetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, j“Soul, you have ample goods laid up kfor many years; relax, leat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, m‘Fool! nThis night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, owhose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up ptreasure for himself and is not qrich toward God.”
10 “One who is jfaithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. 11 If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? 12 And if you have not been faithful in that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own? 13 kNo servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side.1 The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is ucomforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house— 28 for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, v‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, wneither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”
