Proverbs 4:1–4

A Father’s Wise Instruction

fHear, O sons, a father’s instruction,

and be attentive, that you may ggain1 insight,

for I give you good hprecepts;

do not forsake my teaching.

When I was a son with my father,

itender, jthe only one in the sight of my mother,

he ktaught me and said to me,

lLet your heart hold fast my words;

mkeep my commandments, and live.


Proverbs 23:18–23

18  Surely vthere is a future,

and your whope will not be cut off.

19  Hear, my son, and xbe wise,

and ydirect your heart in the way.

20  Be not among zdrunkards1

or among agluttonous eaters of meat,

21  for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty,

and bslumber will clothe them with rags.

22  cListen to your father who gave you life,

dand do not despise your mother when she is old.

23  eBuy truth, and do not sell it;

buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.


Ephesians 6:1–3

Children and Parents

sChildren, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. tHonor your father and mother (this is the first commandment with a promise), that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.
