Temptations to Sin
1 xAnd he said to his disciples, “Temptations to sin1 are sure to come, but ywoe to the one through whom they come! 2 It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.2 3 Pay attention to yourselves! zIf your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, 4 and if he sins against you aseven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”
Increase Our Faith
5 The apostles said to the Lord, b“Increase our faith!” 6 And the Lord said, “If you had cfaith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
Unworthy Servants
7 “Will any one of you who has a servant3 plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’? 8 Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and dress properly,4 and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’? 9 Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? 10 So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants;5 we have only done what was our duty.’”
Jesus Cleanses Ten Lepers
11 On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as he entered a village, he was met by ten dlepers,6 who stood at a edistance 13 and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” 14 When he saw them he said to them, f“Go and gshow yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. 15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, hpraising God with a loud voice; 16 and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. iNow he was a Samaritan. 17 Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? 18 Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this jforeigner?” 19 And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; kyour faith has made you well.”7
The Coming of the Kingdom
20 lBeing asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, “The mkingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed, 21 nor will they say, n‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”8
22 And he said to the disciples, “The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 And they will say to you, ‘Look, there!’ or ‘Look, here!’ Do not go out or follow them. 24 For as the olightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day.9 25 But first he must psuffer many things and be qrejected by this generation. 26 Just as it was in the rdays of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, suntil the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot—they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, 29 but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, tfire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all— 30 so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is urevealed. 31 On that day, vlet the one who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise wlet the one who is in the field not turn back. 32 xRemember Lot’s wife. 33 yWhoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it. 34 I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed. One will be taken and the other left. 35 There will be two women grinding together. One will be taken and the other left.”10 37 And they said to him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, z“Where the corpse11 is, there the vultures12 will gather.”
The Widow’s Offering
1 tJesus1 looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the uoffering box, 2 and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins.2 3 And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. 4 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple
5 vAnd while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, 6 “As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will wnot be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” 7 xAnd they asked him, “Teacher, ywhen will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” 8 And he said, “See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. 9 And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified, for these things must first take place, but zthe end will not be at once.”
Jesus Foretells Wars and Persecution
10 Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. 12 aBut before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the bsynagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before ckings and governors for my name’s sake. 13 This will be your dopportunity to bear witness. 14 eSettle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer, 15 for I will fgive you a mouth and wisdom, which gnone of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. 16 You will be delivered up even by hparents and brothers3 and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to ideath. 17 You will be hated by all for my name’s sake. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. 19 jBy your endurance you will gain your lives.
Jesus Foretells Destruction of Jerusalem
20 k“But when you see Jerusalem lsurrounded by armies, then know that its mdesolation has come near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee nto the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, 22 for these are odays of vengeance, to pfulfill all that is written. 23 qAlas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and rwrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be strampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
The Coming of the Son of Man
25 t“And there will be signs in usun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the vpowers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see the Son of Man wcoming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your xredemption is drawing ynear.”
The Lesson of the Fig Tree
29 zAnd he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. 31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the akingdom of God is near. 32 Truly, I say to you, bthis generation will not pass away until all has taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Watch Yourselves
34 c“But watch yourselves dlest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and ecares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But fstay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
37 And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet. 38 And early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him.
Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple
1 jJesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. 2 But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will knot be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
Signs of the End of the Age
3 lAs he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your mcoming and of nthe oend of the age?” 4 And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.
9 p“Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to qdeath, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. 10 And then many will fall away1 and betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13 rBut the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be sproclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then tthe end will come.
The Abomination of Desolation
15 u“So when you see vthe abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet wDaniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), 16 then let those who are in Judea flee xto the mountains. 17 yLet the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, 18 and zlet the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 19 And aalas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 20 Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. 21 For then there will be bgreat tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. 22 And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. 23 cThen if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great dsigns and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand. 26 So, if they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as the elightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 fWherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.
The Coming of the Son of Man
29 g“Immediately after the tribulation of those days hthe sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the istars will fall from heaven, and the jpowers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then kall the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man lcoming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he will send out his angels with a loud mtrumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
The Lesson of the Fig Tree
32 n“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is onear, at the very gates. 34 Truly, I say to you, pthis generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
No One Knows That Day and Hour
36 q“But concerning that day and hour rno one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son,2 but the Father only. 37 For as were the sdays of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, tuntil the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. 42 Therefore, ustay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that vif the master of the house had known in what part of the night the wthief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
45 x“Who then is the faithful and wise servant,3 whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? 46 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 47 Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. 48 But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants4 and eats and drinks with drunkards, 50 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know 51 and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be yweeping and gnashing of teeth.
Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple
1 cAnd as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” 2 And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will dnot be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
Signs of the End of the Age
3 eAnd as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” 5 And Jesus began to say to them, “See that no one leads you astray. 6 Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. 7 And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but fthe end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.
9 g“But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to hcouncils, and you will be beaten in isynagogues, and you will stand before jgovernors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them. 10 And the gospel must first be kproclaimed to all nations. 11 And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, ldo not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the mHoly Spirit. 12 And nbrother will deliver brother over to odeath, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. 13 And you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. pBut the one who endures to the end will be saved.
The Abomination of Desolation
14 q“But when you see rthe abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee sto the mountains. 15 tLet the one who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything out, 16 and ulet the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 17 And valas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 18 Pray that it may not happen in winter. 19 For in those days there will be such wtribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be. 20 And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days. 21 xAnd then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. 22 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform ysigns and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23 But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand.
The Coming of the Son of Man
24 z“But in those days, after that tribulation, athe sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the bstars will be falling from heaven, and the cpowers in the heavens will be shaken. 26 And then they will see the Son of Man dcoming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
The Lesson of the Fig Tree
28 e“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is fnear, at the very gates. 30 Truly, I say to you, gthis generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
No One Knows That Day or Hour
32 h“But concerning that day or that hour, ino one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard, jkeep awake.1 For you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man kgoing on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants2 in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. 35 Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows,3 or in the morning— 36 lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.”
