Woe to Unrepentant Cities

20 ^sThen he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be ^tmore bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be ^uexalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in ^vSodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”

Beware of the Scribes

38 ^vAnd in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like ^wgreetings in the marketplaces 39 and have the ^xbest seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 40 who ^ydevour widows’ houses and for a ^zpretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

The Widow’s Offering

41 ^aAnd he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the ^boffering box. Many rich people put in large sums.

Beware of the Scribes

45 ^oAnd in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love ^pgreetings in the marketplaces and the ^qbest seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 47 who ^rdevour widows’ houses and for a ^spretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

26 For ^tif we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the ^uknowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a ^vfury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy ^won the evidence of two or three witnesses. 29 ^xHow much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has ^ytrampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the ^zblood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?

Taming the Tongue
