18  ^wAnd now what do you gain by going to Egypt

to drink the waters of the Nile?¹

Or what do you gain by going to Assyria

to drink the waters of the Euphrates?²

36  How much you go about,

changing your way!

You shall be put to shame ^tby Egypt

as you were put to shame ^uby Assyria.

6  We have given the hand to Egypt, and to Assyria,

to get bread enough.

1  Ephraim feeds on the wind

and pursues the east wind all day long;

they multiply falsehood and violence;

^dthey make a covenant with Assyria,

and oil is carried to Egypt.
