Joshua 15

The Allotment for Judah

The allotment for the tribe of the people of Judah according to their clans reached southward hto the boundary of Edom, to ithe wilderness of Zin at the farthest south. And their south boundary ran from the end of the hSalt Sea, from the bay that faces southward. It goes out southward of jthe ascent of Akrabbim, passes along to Zin, and goes up south of Kadesh-barnea, along by Hezron, up to Addar, turns about to Karka, passes along to Azmon, goes out by kthe Brook of Egypt, and comes to its end at the sea. This shall be your south boundary. And the east boundary is the hSalt Sea, to the mouth of the Jordan. And the boundary on the north side runs from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan. And the boundary goes up to lBeth-hoglah and passes along north of mBeth-arabah. And the boundary goes up to nthe stone of Bohan the son of Reuben. And the boundary goes up to Debir from othe Valley of Achor, and so northward, turning toward Gilgal, which is opposite pthe ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the valley. And the boundary passes along to the waters of pEn-shemesh and ends at qEn-rogel. Then the boundary goes up by rthe Valley of the Son of Hinnom at the southern shoulder of the Jebusite (sthat is, Jerusalem). And the boundary goes up to the top of the mountain that lies over against the Valley of Hinnom, on the west, at the northern end of the Valley tof Rephaim. Then the boundary extends from the top of the mountain uto the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, and from there to the cities of Mount Ephron. Then the boundary bends around to Baalah (vthat is, Kiriath-jearim). 10 And the boundary circles west of Baalah to Mount Seir, passes along to the northern shoulder of Mount Jearim (that is, Chesalon), and goes down to wBeth-shemesh and passes along by xTimnah. 11 The boundary goes out yto the shoulder of the hill north of Ekron, then the boundary bends around to Shikkeron and passes along to Mount zBaalah and goes out to Jabneel. Then the boundary comes to an end at the sea. 12 And the west boundary was athe Great Sea with its coastline. This is the boundary around the people of Judah according to their clans.

13 According to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, he gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh a portion among the people of Judah, bKiriath-arba, that is, bHebron (Arba was the father of Anak). 14 And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak, cSheshai and Ahiman and Talmai, the descendants of Anak. 15 And he went up from there against the inhabitants of Debir. dNow the name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-sepher. 16 And Caleb said, Whoever strikes Kiriath-sepher and captures it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter as wife. 17 eAnd Othniel the son of Kenaz, fthe brother of Caleb, captured it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife. 18 When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she got off her donkey, and Caleb said to her, What do you want? 19 She said to him, Give me a blessing. Since you have given me the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water. And he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

More Proverbs of Solomon

These also are mproverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied.

It is the glory of God to nconceal things,

but the glory of kings is to osearch things out.

As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth,

so the heart of kings is punsearchable.

Take away qthe dross from the silver,

and rthe smith has material for a vessel;

take away sthe wicked from the presence of the king,

and his tthrone will be established in righteousness.

Do not put yourself forward in the king’s presence

or stand in the place of the great,

for uit is better to be told, Come up here,

than to be put lower in the presence of a noble.

What your eyes have seen

wdo not hastily bring into court,1

for2 what will you do in the end,

when your neighbor puts you to shame?

xArgue your case with your neighbor himself,

and do not reveal another’s secret,

10  lest he who hears you bring shame upon you,

and your ill repute have no end.

11  yA word fitly spoken

is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.

12  Like za gold ring or an ornament of gold

is a wise reprover to aa listening ear.

13  Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest

is ba faithful messenger to those who send him;

he refreshes the soul of his masters.

14  Like cclouds and wind without rain

is a man who dboasts of a gift he does not give.

15  With epatience a ruler may be persuaded,

and a soft tongue will break a bone.

16  If you have ffound honey, eat gonly enough for you,

lest you have your fill of it and vomit it.

17  Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor’s house,

lest he have his fill of you and hate you.

18  A man who hbears false witness against his neighbor

is like a war club, or ia sword, or a sharp arrow.

19  Trusting in a treacherous man in time of trouble

is like a bad tooth or a foot that slips.

20  Whoever jsings songs to a heavy heart

is like one who takes off a garment on a cold day,

and like vinegar on soda.

21  kIf your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat,

and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink,

22  for you will heap lburning coals on his head,

and the Lord will reward you.

23  The north wind brings forth rain,

and a backbiting tongue, angry looks.

24  mIt is better to live in a corner of the housetop

than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.

25  Like cold water to na thirsty soul,

so is ogood news from a far country.

26  Like pa muddied spring or a polluted fountain

is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.

27  It is qnot good to eat much honey,

nor is it glorious to rseek one’s own glory.3

28  A man swithout self-control

is like ta city broken into and left without walls.
