Jeremiah 5:1–19

Jerusalem Refused to Repent

1  Run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem,

look and take note!

Search her squares to see

if you can find a man,

one who does justice

and seeks truth,

that I may pardon her.

2  Though they say, “As the Lord lives,”

yet they fswear falsely.

3  O Lord, do not your eyes look for truth?

You have gstruck them down,

but they felt no anguish;

you have consumed them,

but they refused to htake correction.

They have made their faces harder than rock;

they have refused to repent.

4  Then I said, “These are only the poor;

they have no sense;

for they do not know the way of the Lord,

the ijustice of their God.

5  I will go to the great

and will speak to them,

for they know the way of the Lord,

the justice of their God.”

But they all alike had broken the yoke;

they had jburst the bonds.

6  Therefore a klion from the forest shall strike them down;

a lwolf from the desert shall devastate them.

A mleopard is watching their cities;

everyone who goes out of them shall be torn in pieces,

because their transgressions are many,

their apostasies are great.

7  “How can I pardon you?

Your children have nforsaken me

and have osworn by those who are pno gods.

When I fed them to the full,

they committed adultery

and trooped to the houses of whores.

8  They were well-fed, lusty stallions,

each qneighing for his neighbor’s wife.

9  rShall I not punish them for these things?

declares the Lord;

and shall I not savenge myself

on a nation such as this?

10  “Go up through her tvine rows and destroy,

but umake not a full end;

strip away her branches,

for they are not the Lord’s.

11  For the house of Israel and the house of Judah

have been utterly vtreacherous to me,

declares the Lord.

12  They have spoken falsely of the Lord

and have said, ‘He will do nothing;

wno disaster will come upon us,

xnor shall we see sword or famine.

13  The prophets will become wind;

the word is not in them.

Thus shall it be done to them!’”

The Lord Proclaims Judgment

14  Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts:

“Because you have spoken this word,

behold, yI am making my words in your mouth a fire,

and this people wood, and the fire shall consume them.

15  Behold, zI am bringing against you

a nation afrom afar, O house of Israel,

declares the Lord.

It is an enduring nation;

it is an ancient nation,

a nation whose language you do not know,

nor can you understand what they say.

16  Their quiver is like an open tomb;

they are all mighty warriors.

17  They shall beat up your harvest and your food;

they shall eat up your sons and your daughters;

they shall eat up your cflocks and your herds;

they shall eat up your vines and your fig trees;

your fortified cities in which you trust

they shall beat down with the sword.”

18 “But even in those days, declares the Lord, I will not make a full end of you. 19 And when your people say, d‘Why has the Lord our God done all these things to us?’ you shall say to them, ‘As you have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your land, so you shall serve foreigners in a land that is not yours.’”

Matthew 22:23–46

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

23 hThe same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no iresurrection, and they asked him a question, 24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, j‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. 26 So too the second and third, down to the seventh. 27 After them all, the woman died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”

29 But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God: 32 k‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 And when the crowd heard it, they were lastonished at his teaching.

The Great Commandment

34 mBut when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, n“You shall olove the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: pYou shall qlove your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend rall the Law and the Prophets.”

Whose Son Is the Christ?

41 sNow while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The tson of David.” 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

44  u“‘The Lord said to my Lord,

“Sit at my right hand,

until I put your enemies under your feet”’?

45 If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?” 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
