Moses and Aaron Before Pharaoh

1 And the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like ^oGod to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron shall be your ^pprophet. 2 ^qYou shall speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron shall tell Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go out of his land. 3 But ^rI will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I ^smultiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, 4 Pharaoh will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and bring my hosts, my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment. 5 The Egyptians ^tshall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring out the people of Israel from among them.”

13 And Moses said to the people, ^g“Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For ^hthe Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. 14 ⁱThe Lord will fight for you, and you have only ^jto be silent.”

15 The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward. 16 ^kLift up your staff, and ^kstretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground. 17 And ^lI will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they shall go in after them, and ^mI will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, his chariots, and his horsemen. 18 And the Egyptians ⁿshall know that I am the Lord, ^mwhen I have gotten glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.”

19 ^oThen the angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them, 20 coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness. And it lit up the night¹ without one coming near the other all night.

21 Then Moses ^kstretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by ^pa strong east wind all night and ^qmade the sea dry land, and the waters were ^rdivided. 22 And ^sthe people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being ^ta wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 23 The Egyptians pursued and went in after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. 24 And in the morning watch the Lord in the pillar of fire and of cloud looked down on the Egyptian forces and threw the Egyptian forces into a panic, 25 clogging² their chariot wheels so that they drove heavily. And the Egyptians said, “Let us flee from before Israel, for the ^uLord fights for them against the Egyptians.”

Bread from Heaven

1 They ^kset out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt. 2 And the whole congregation of the people of Israel ^lgrumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, 3 and the people of Israel said to them, ^m“Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, ⁿwhen we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain ^obread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may ^ptest them, whether they will walk in my law or not. 5 On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, ^qit will be twice as much as they gather daily.” 6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, ^r“At evening ^syou shall know that it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, 7 and in the morning you shall see the ^tglory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against the Lord. For ^uwhat are we, that you grumble against us?” 8 And Moses said, “When the Lord gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the Lord has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him—^vwhat are we? Your grumbling is not ^wagainst us but against the Lord.”

9 Then Moses ^xsaid to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, ^y‘Come near before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’” 10 And as soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the ^tglory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. 11 And the Lord said to Moses, 12 “I ^zhave heard the grumbling of the people of Israel. Say to them, ‘At ^atwilight you shall eat meat, and ^bin the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’”

2 ¹ And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: ^e“You have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, 3 the great ^ftrials that your eyes saw, the signs, and those great wonders. 4 But to this day ^gthe Lord has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear. 5 ^hI have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn off your feet.

Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Spirit

21 ^jAnd they went into Capernaum, and immediately ^kon the Sabbath ^lhe entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And ^mthey were astonished at his teaching, ^mfor he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 ⁿ“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? ^oI know who you are—^pthe Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus ^qrebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, ^rconvulsing him and ^scrying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all ^tamazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? ^uA new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

Jesus Heals Many

29 ^vAnd immediately he^{1 w}left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now ^xSimon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. 31 And he came and ^ytook her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or ^zoppressed by demons. 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34 ^aAnd he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And ^bhe would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

Jesus Preaches in Galilee

35 ^cAnd rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and ^dthere he prayed. 36 And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, 37 and they found him and said to him, ^e“Everyone is looking for you.” 38 And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for ^fthat is why I came out.” 39 ^gAnd ^hhe went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

Jesus Walks on the Water

22 ^lImmediately he ^mmade the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, ⁿhe went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When ^oevening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat by this time was a long way¹ from the land,² beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25 And ^lin the fourth watch of the night³ he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, ^pthey were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, ^q“Take heart; it is I. ^qDo not be afraid.”

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

10 On their return ^zthe apostles told him all that they had done. ^aAnd he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida. 11 When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he ^bwelcomed them and ^cspoke to them of the kingdom of God and ^ccured those who had need of healing. 12 Now ^dthe day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, ^e“Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.” 13 But he said to them, ^f“You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than ^gfive loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 And they did so, and had them all sit down. 16 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, ^hhe looked up to heaven and ⁱsaid a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.

I Am the Resurrection and the Life

17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb ^bfour days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles¹ off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary ^cto console them concerning their brother. 20 ^dSo when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to ^eJesus, “Lord, ^fif you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, ^gGod will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 ^hMartha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in ⁱthe resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, ^j“I am the resurrection and ^kthe life.² Whoever believes in me, ^lthough he die, ^myet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me ⁿshall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; ^oI believe that ^pyou are the Christ, the Son of God, ^qwho is coming into the world.”

Jesus Weeps

28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, ^r“The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29 And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31 When the Jews ^swho were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, ^t“Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he ^uwas deeply moved³ in his spirit and ^vgreatly troubled. 34 And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 ^wJesus wept. 36 So the Jews said, “See ^xhow he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he ^ywho opened the eyes of the blind man ^zalso have kept this man from dying?”

Jesus Raises Lazarus

38 Then Jesus, ^adeeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was ^ba cave, and ^ca stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for ^dhe has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, ^e“Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see ^fthe glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus ^glifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 ^hI knew that you always hear me, but I said this ⁱon account of the people standing around, ^jthat they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 ^kThe man who had died came out, ^lhis hands and feet bound with linen strips, and ^mhis face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
