Isaiah 32–33; Mark 8

A King Will Reign in Righteousness

32  Behold, oa king will reign in righteousness,

and princes will rule in justice.

pEach will be like a hiding place from the wind,

a shelter from the storm,

qlike streams of water in a dry place,

like the shade of a great rock in a weary land.

rThen the eyes of those who see will not be closed,

and the ears of those who hear will give attention.

The heart of the hasty will understand and know,

sand the tongue of the stammerers will hasten to speak distinctly.

tThe fool will no more be called noble,

nor the scoundrel said to be honorable.

For uthe fool speaks folly,

and his heart is busy with iniquity,

to practice ungodliness,

to utter error concerning the Lord,

vto leave the craving of the hungry unsatisfied,

and to deprive the thirsty of drink.

As for the scoundrelwhis devices are evil;

he plans wicked schemes

to ruin the poor with lying words,

even when the plea of the needy is right.

But he who is noble plans noble things,

and on noble things he stands.

Complacent Women Warned of Disaster

xRise up, you women ywho are at ease, hear my voice;

you complacent daughters, give ear to my speech.

10  In little more than a year

you will shudder, you complacent women;

for the grape harvest fails,

the fruit harvest will not come.

11  Tremble, you women ywho are at ease,

shudder, you complacent ones;

zstrip, and make yourselves bare,

aand tie sackcloth around your waist.

12  bBeat your breasts for the pleasant fields,

for the fruitful vine,

13  cfor the soil of my people

growing up in thorns and briers,

dyes, for all the joyous houses

in the exultant city.

14  For the palace is forsaken,

the populous city deserted;

the hill and the watchtower

will become dens forever,

ea joy of wild donkeys,

a pasture of flocks;

15  until fthe Spirit is poured upon us from on high,

and gthe wilderness becomes a fruitful field,

and the fruitful field is deemed a forest.

16  Then justice will dwell in the wilderness,

and righteousness abide in the fruitful field.

17  hAnd the effect of righteousness will be peace,

and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust1 forever.

18  My people will abide in a peaceful habitation,

in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.

19  iAnd it will hail when the forest falls down,

jand the city will be utterly laid low.

20  kHappy are you who sow beside all waters,

who let the feet of the ox and the donkey range free.

O Lord, Be Gracious to Us

33  lAh, you destroyer,

who yourself have not been destroyed,

you traitor,

whom none has betrayed!

When you have ceased to destroy,

you will be destroyed;

and when you have finished betraying,

they will betray you.

O Lord, be gracious to us; mwe wait for you.

Be our arm every morning,

our salvation in the time of trouble.

nAt the tumultuous noise peoples flee;

when you lift yourself up, nations are scattered,

and your spoil is gathered as the caterpillar gathers;

oas locusts leap, it is leapt upon.

pThe Lord is exalted, for he dwells on high;

he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness,

qand he will be the stability of your times,

abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge;

the fear of the Lord is Zion's2 treasure.

Behold, their heroes cry in the streets;

rthe envoys of peace weep bitterly.

sThe highways lie waste;

the traveler ceases.

tCovenants are broken;

cities3 are despised;

there is no regard for man.

uThe land mourns and languishes;

Lebanon is confounded and withers away;

Sharon is like a desert,

and Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves.

10  vNow I will arise, says the Lord,

now I will lift myself up;

now I will be exalted.

11  wYou conceive chaff; you give birth to stubble;

your breath is xa fire that will consume you.

12  And the peoples will be as if burned to lime,

xlike thorns cut down, that are burned in the fire.

13  Hear, you who are far off, what I have done;

and you who are near, acknowledge my might.

14  The sinners in Zion are afraid;

trembling has seized the godless:

yWho among us can dwell zwith the consuming fire?

Who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings?

15  aHe who walks righteously and speaks uprightly,

who despises the gain of oppressions,

who shakes his hands, lest they hold a bribe,

who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed

band shuts his eyes from looking on evil,

16  he will dwell on the heights;

his place of defense will be the fortresses of rocks;

chis bread will be given him; his water will be sure.

17  dYour eyes will behold the king in his beauty;

ethey will see a land that stretches afar.

18  fYour heart will muse on the terror:

Where is he who counted, where is ghe who weighed the tribute?

Where is hhe who counted the towers?

19  iYou will see no more the insolent people,

the people jof an obscure speech that you cannot comprehend,

stammering in a tongue that you cannot understand.

20  Behold Zion, the city of our appointed feasts!

kYour eyes will see Jerusalem,

an untroubled habitation, an limmovable tent,

whose stakes will never be plucked up,

nor will any of its cords be broken.

21  But there the Lord in majesty will be for us

a place of mbroad rivers and streams,

nwhere no galley with oars can go,

nor majestic ship can pass.

22  For the Lord is our ojudge; the Lord is our plawgiver;

the Lord is our qking; he will save us.

23  Your cords hang loose;

they cannot hold the mast firm in its place

or keep the sail spread out.

rThen prey and spoil in abundance will be divided;

even sthe lame will take the prey.

24  And no inhabitant will say, tI am sick;

uthe people who dwell there will be forgiven their iniquity.


Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

lIn those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him and said to them, mI have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away. And his disciples answered him, How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place? And he asked them, How many loaves do you have? They said, nSeven. And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and ohaving given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd. And they had a few small fish. And phaving blessed them, he said that these also should be set before them. And qthey ate and were satisfied. And they took up the broken pieces left over, nseven baskets full. And there were about four thousand people. And he sent them away. 10 And immediately he got into rthe boat with his disciples and went to the district of sDalmanutha.1

The Pharisees Demand a Sign

11 tThe Pharisees came and began to argue with him, useeking from him va sign from heaven wto test him. 12 And xhe sighed deeply yin his spirit and said, Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation. 13 And zhe left them, got into the boat again, and went to the other side.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod

14 Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. 15 And he cautioned them, saying, Watch out; abeware of bthe leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of cHerod.2 16 And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. 17 And dJesus, aware of this, said to them, Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? eDo you not yet perceive for understand? fAre your hearts hardened? 18 gHaving eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19 When I broke hthe five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up? They said to him, Twelve. 20 And ithe seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up? And they said to him, Seven. 21 And he said to them, Do you not yet understand?

Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida

22 And they came jto Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. 23 And khe took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when khe had lspit on his eyes and mlaid his hands on him, he asked him, Do you see anything? 24 And he looked up and said, I see people, but they look like trees, walking. 25 Then Jesus3 laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 And he sent him to his home, saying, nDo not even enter the village.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

27 oAnd Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, Who do people say that I am? 28 And they told him, pJohn the Baptist; and others say, qElijah; and others, one of the prophets. 29 And he asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered him, rYou are sthe Christ. 30 tAnd he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

31 uAnd he began to teach them that vthe Son of Man must wsuffer many things and xbe rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and yafter three days rise again. 32 And he said this zplainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, aGet behind me, Satan! For you bare not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.

34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, If anyone would come after me, let him cdeny himself and dtake up his cross and follow me. 35 For dwhoever would save his life4 will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake eand the gospel's will save it. 36 fFor what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For gwhat can a man give in return for his soul? 38 For hwhoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this iadulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed jwhen he comes in the glory of his Father with kthe holy angels.
