18 “You shall therefore lay up these words of mine ^qin your heart and in your soul, and ^ryou shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as ^sfrontlets between your eyes. 19 ^tYou shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 20 ^uYou shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, 21 that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth. 22 For if you will be careful to do all this commandment that I command you to do, loving the Lord your God, walking in all his ways, and holding fast to him, 23 then ^vthe Lord will drive out all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations greater and mightier than you. 24 ^wEvery place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours. Your territory shall be ^xfrom the wilderness to¹ the Lebanon, and from the River, the river Euphrates, to the western sea. 25 ^yNo one shall be able to stand against you. The Lord your God will lay the ^zfear of you and the dread of you on all the land that you shall tread, as he promised you.

26 ^a“See, I am setting before you today a ^bblessing and a curse: 27 ^cthe blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, 28 and ^dthe curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way that I am commanding you today, to go after other gods that you have not known.

1 For ^uevery high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices ^vfor sins. 2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, ^wsince he himself is beset with ^xweakness. 3 Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice ^yfor his own sins just as he does for those of the people. 4 And ^zno one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

5 So also Christ ^adid not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him,

6 as he says also in another place,

7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus¹ offered up ^eprayers and supplications, with ^floud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was a ^gson, he learned ^hobedience through what he suffered. 9 And ⁱbeing made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Jesus and the Woman of Samaria

1 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and ^bbaptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 3 he left Judea and departed ^cagain for Galilee. 4 And he had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near ^dthe field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.¹

7 A woman from Samaria came ^eto draw water. Jesus said to her, ^f“Give me a drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For ^gJews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you ^hliving water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater ⁱthan our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but ^jwhoever drinks of the water that I will give him ^kwill never be thirsty again.² The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, ^lgive me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that ^myou are a prophet. 20 ⁿOur fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, ^othe hour is coming when ^pneither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father ^qin spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that ^rMessiah is coming (he who is called Christ). ^sWhen he comes, he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, ^t“I who speak to you am he.”
