1 Thus says the Lord:
k“For three transgressions of jMoab,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,1
because khe burned to lime
the bones of the king of Edom.
2 So I will send a fire upon Moab,
and it shall devour the strongholds of lKerioth,
and Moab shall die amid uproar,
amid shouting and the sound of the trumpet;
3 mI will cut off the ruler from its midst,
and will kill mall its princes2 with him,”
says the Lord.
Judgment on Judah
4 Thus says the Lord:
n“For three transgressions of Judah,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because othey have rejected the law of the Lord,
and have not kept his statutes,
but ptheir lies have led them astray,
those after which their fathers walked.
5 So qI will send a fire upon Judah,
and it shall devour the strongholds of Jerusalem.”
Judgment on Israel
6 Thus says the Lord:
n“For three transgressions of Israel,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because rthey sell the righteous for ssilver,
and the needy for a pair of sandals—
7 those who trample the head of the poor tinto the dust of the earth
and uturn aside the way of the afflicted;
va man and his father go in to the same girl,
so that my holy name is profaned;
8 they lay themselves down beside every altar
on garments wtaken in pledge,
and in the house of their God they drink
the wine of those who have been fined.
9 “Yet xit was I who destroyed the Amorite before them,
ywhose height was like the height of the cedars
and who was as strong as the oaks;
zI destroyed his fruit above
and his roots beneath.
10 aAlso it was I who brought you up out of the land of Egypt
band led you forty years in the wilderness,
xto possess the land of the Amorite.
11 And I raised up some of your sons for prophets,
and some of your young men for cNazirites.
Is it not indeed so, O people of Israel?”
declares the Lord.
12 “But you made the Nazirites ddrink wine,
and commanded the prophets,
saying, e‘You shall not prophesy.’
13 “Behold, I will press you down in your place,
as a cart full of sheaves presses down.
14 fFlight shall perish from the swift,
fand the strong shall not retain his strength,
gnor shall the mighty save his life;
15 he who handles the bow shall not stand,
and he who is hswift of foot shall not save himself,
inor shall he who rides the horse save his life;
16 and he who is stout of heart among the mighty
shall flee away naked in that day,”
declares the Lord.
Israel’s Guilt and Punishment
1 jHear this word that the Lord has spoken against you, O people of Israel, against the whole family that I brought up out of the land of Egypt:
2 k“You only have I known
of all the families of the earth;
ltherefore I will punish you
for all your iniquities.
3 “Do two walk together,
unless they have agreed to meet?
4 Does a lion roar in the forest,
when he has no prey?
Does a young lion cry out from his den,
if he has taken nothing?
5 Does a bird fall in a snare on the earth,
when there is no trap for it?
Does a snare spring up from the ground,
when it has taken nothing?
6 mIs a trumpet blown in a city,
and the people are not afraid?
nDoes disaster come to a city,
unless the Lord has done it?
7 “For the Lord God does nothing
owithout revealing his secret
to his servants the prophets.
8 The lion has roared;
who will not fear?
pThe Lord God has spoken;
who can but prophesy?”
9 Proclaim to the strongholds in qAshdod
and to the strongholds in the land of Egypt,
and say, “Assemble yourselves on rthe mountains of Samaria,
and see the great tumults within her,
and sthe oppressed in her midst.”
10 “They do not know how to do right,” declares the Lord,
t“those who store up violence and robbery in their strongholds.”
11 Therefore thus says the Lord God:
u“An adversary shall surround the land
and bring down3 your defenses from you,
and vyour strongholds shall be plundered.”
12 Thus says the Lord: w“As the shepherd rescues from the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, xso shall the people of Israel ywho dwell in Samaria be rescued, with the corner of a couch and part4 of a bed.
13 “Hear, zand testify against the house of Jacob,”
declares the Lord God, athe God of hosts,
14 “that on the day I punish Israel for his transgressions,
bI will punish the altars of Bethel,
and cthe horns of the altar shall be cut off
and fall to the ground.
15 dI will strike ethe winter house along with fthe summer house,
and gthe houses of ivory shall perish,
and the great houses5 shall come to an end,”
declares the Lord.
1 “Hear this word, hyou cows of Bashan,
who are ion the mountain of Samaria,
jwho oppress the poor, jwho crush the needy,
who say to your husbands, ‘Bring, that we may drink!’
2 kThe Lord God has sworn by his holiness
that, behold, the days are coming upon you,
lwhen they shall take you away with hooks,
leven the last of you with fishhooks.
3 mAnd you shall go out through the breaches,
each one straight ahead;
and you shall be cast out into Harmon,”
declares the Lord.
4 n“Come to Bethel, and transgress;
to oGilgal, and multiply transgression;
nbring your psacrifices every morning,
your tithes every three days;
5 offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving of qthat which is leavened,
and proclaim rfreewill offerings, publish them;
sfor so you love to do, O people of Israel!”
declares the Lord God.
Israel Has Not Returned to the Lord
6 “I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities,
and tlack of bread in all your places,
uyet you did not return to me,”
declares the Lord.
7 “I also vwithheld the rain from you
when there were yet three months to the harvest;
wI would send rain on one city,
and send no rain on another city;
one field would have rain,
and the field on which it did not rain would wither;
8 so two or three cities xwould wander to another city
to drink water, and would not be satisfied;
uyet you did not return to me,”
declares the Lord.
9 y“I struck you with blight and mildew;
your many gardens and your vineyards,
your fig trees and your olive trees zthe locust devoured;
uyet you did not return to me,”
declares the Lord.
10 “I sent among you a pestilence aafter the manner of Egypt;
I killed your young men with the sword,
and bcarried away your horses,6
and cI made the stench of your camp go up into your nostrils;
uyet you did not return to me,”
declares the Lord.
11 “I overthrew some of you,
das when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,
and you were eas a brand7 plucked out of the burning;
uyet you did not return to me,”
declares the Lord.
12 “Therefore thus I will do to you, O Israel;
because I will do this to you,
prepare to meet your God, O Israel!”
13 For behold, fhe who forms the mountains and creates the wind,
and gdeclares to man what is his thought,
hwho makes the morning darkness,
and itreads on the heights of the earth—
jthe Lord, the God of hosts, is his name!
1 And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and qI saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given rthe key to the shaft of sthe bottomless pit.1 2 He opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft trose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and uthe sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. 3 Then from the smoke came vlocusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth. 4 They were told wnot to harm xthe grass of the earth or any green plant or any tree, but only those people who do not have ythe seal of God on their foreheads. 5 They were allowed to torment them zfor five months, but not to kill them, and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings someone. 6 And in those days apeople will seek death and will not find it. They will long to die, but death will flee from them.
7 bIn appearance the locusts were like horses prepared for battle: con their heads were what looked like crowns of gold; their faces were dlike human faces, 8 their hair like women’s hair, and etheir teeth like lions’ teeth; 9 they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the noise of their wings was flike the noise of many chariots with ghorses rushing into battle. 10 They have tails and stings like scorpions, and their power to hurt people hfor five months is in their tails. 11 They have ias king over them the angel of the bottomless pit. His name in Hebrew is jAbaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon.2
12 kThe first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still to come.
13 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice from lthe four horns of the golden altar before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release mthe four angels who are bound at nthe great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour, the day, the month, and the year, were released oto kill a third of mankind. 16 The number of pmounted troops was qtwice ten thousand times ten thousand; rI heard their number. 17 And this is how I saw the horses in my vision and those who rode them: they wore breastplates the color of fire and of sapphire3 and of sulfur, and the heads of the horses were slike lions’ heads, and fire and smoke and sulfur came out of their mouths. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed, by the fire and smoke and sulfur coming out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, for their tails are like serpents with heads, and by means of them they wound.
20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, tdid not repent of uthe works of their hands nor give up worshiping vdemons wand idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, 21 nor did they repent of their murders or their xsorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.
