Hannah’s Prayer

1 And Hannah prayed and said,

h“My heart exults in the Lord;

imy horn is exalted in the Lord.

My mouth derides my enemies,

because I rejoice in your salvation.

2  “There is jnone kholy like the Lord:

for there is lnone besides you;

there is mno rock like our God.

3  Talk no more so very proudly,

let not arrogance come from your mouth;

for the Lord is a God of knowledge,

and by him actions are weighed.

4  The bows of the mighty are broken,

but the feeble bind on strength.

5  Those who were nfull have hired themselves out for bread,

but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger.

The barren has borne seven,

but she who has many children is forlorn.

6  oThe Lord kills and brings to life;

he brings down to Sheol and praises up.

7  The Lord makes poor and makes rich;

qhe brings low and he exalts.

8  rHe raises up the poor from the dust;

he lifts the needy from the ash heap

to make them sit with princes

and inherit a seat of honor.

For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,

and on them he has set the world.

9  “He will guard the feet of his faithful ones,

but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness,

for snot by might shall a man prevail.

10  The adversaries of the Lord shall be tbroken to pieces;

against them he will uthunder in heaven.

The Lord will vjudge the ends of the earth;

he will give strength to his king

and exalt the horn of his anointed.”

John 8:31–36

The Truth Will Set You Free

31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you labide in my word, myou are truly my disciples, 32 and you will nknow the truth, and the truth will set you ofree.” 33 They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a pslave1 to sin. 35 qThe slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

1 John 3:1–8

1 See what kind of hlove the Father has given to us, that we should be called ichildren of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that jit did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that kwhen he appears1 we shall be llike him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to mtake away sins, and nin him there is no sin. 6 oNo one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either pseen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one qdeceive you. rWhoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to sdestroy the works of the devil.
