9 Jabez was hmore honorable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.”1
19 And the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter. Now rhe was the most honored of all his father’s house.
16 To the woman he said,
“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
iin pain you shall bring forth children.
jYour desire shall be for1 your husband,
and he shall krule over you.”
18 And as her soul was departing (for she was dying), she called his name Ben-oni;1 wbut his father called him Benjamin.2
God Blesses and Renames Jacob
1 God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to bBethel and dwell there. Make an altar there to the God who appeared to you cwhen you fled from your brother Esau.”
21 And she named the child nIchabod, saying, o“The glory has departed1 from Israel!” because pthe ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
The Philistines Capture the Ark
1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel.
Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines. They encamped at wEbenezer, and the Philistines encamped at xAphek.
23 And Ephraim went in to his wife, and she conceived and bore a son. And he called his name Beriah, because disaster had befallen his house.1
4 Because you are precious in my eyes,
and honored, and I love you,
I give men in return for you,
peoples in exchange for your life.
11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, xexamining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.
