URL shorteners simply convert long addresses into shorter ones (helpful for Twitter, for example, where character count is important). Bookmark www.esv.to to quickly generate shortened URLs for the ESV Online.

The great thing about ESV.to, however, is that by remembering a few simple, logical rules (detailed on the site) you can create the link yourself without having to use the generator.

For example: If you wanted to read Matthew 5 online you could visit www.esvonline.org and search for Matthew 5 or you could use the service’s easy-to-remember format and simply type “esv.to/Mt5″ into your web browser to navigate directly there. Likewise, to shorten a link in a tweet you could either visit www.esv.to and type “Matthew 5″ into the generator or simply use “http://esv.to/Mt5″.

We didn’t have time to unpack it in this video snapshot, but anyone who had previously bought an ESV Study Bible and created an Online Study Bible account can use their same username and password to access those notes within the ESV Online.

Today we wanted to highlight a few things about this new online study tool, so here’s our “Top Five” list.

1. It’s a process. We’ve been working on the site for nearly a year—researching and listening to our customer comments, and we haven’t stopped. We love working closely with you so please continue to give us feedback.
2. There are many features and more to come. We’ve included reading plans/devotionals, the ability to take personal notes, advanced Bible searching, Bible audio, as well as the ESV Study Bible content and we’re growing the list.
3. There’s a lot of free. Most of the features are available to anyone and everyone for free. They can register for a new account at: http://esvonline.org/account/register. Please spread the word!
4. Study notes and resources are available. We created an interface where the ESV Study Bible notes and resources can be viewed alongside the Bible text, continually tracking as you scroll. We’ve found that this layout seems most conducive for in-depth study of God’s Word. The idea was to keep our users from navigating away from the Bible to access these notes and resources.
5. Future content. A very big reason why we created this new online Bible tool was to also create a platform where we could provide a wealth of extra-biblical content to help deepen your study of God’s Word. We hope to bring you many more content modules to help accomplish that goal, so please stay tuned!

Users are able to customize their own interface, highlight and mark verse numbers, add bookmark ribbons, search the ESV text, and manage personal notes. The free version also includes a variety of daily reading plans and devotional calendars.

Want to try the highly acclaimed ESV Study Bible free? For a limited time, everyone who signs up for an ESV Online account will receive a free 30 day trial access to the ESV Study Bible. Current Online ESV Study Bible users will be contacted via email over the coming weeks and will have their accounts migrated to the ESV Online site with access to all the study notes and resources. The Study Bible module is also available to purchase within the ESV Online platform or for free with the purchase of any print edition of the ESV Study Bible.
