Crossway’s ESV iPhone/iPod Touch App

Crossway has been working on several innovative tools to serve you in your study of God’s Word. Today, we’re excited to make the first of several new product announcements. In a few short weeks an innovative application will be available for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Some of its features:

  • Use. The ESV Bible App downloads to your iPhone or iPod touch and offers a fantastic user experience, online or offline. Finding a verse is fast and easy. Jump from a cross-reference or footnote back to your passage with seamless fluidity.
  • Read. Scroll through the entire Bible in landscape or full screen modes and enlarge or shrink font sizes to fit your needs. The ESV Bible App emulates the same unique typography users encounter with print versions of the ESV.
  • Search. Ever had a verse on the tip of your tongue but can’t remember where it’s found? Search for it with the Bible App’s comprehensive concordance.
  • Write. With the ability to record notes, you can capture your thoughts and observations in a sermon or personal Bible study.
  • Highlight. Highlight verses by simply pressing on them. Save them in your favorites for future reference.
  • Share. Share verses with friends and family via email and Twitter (Facebook in a later update).
  • Manage. Add, delete, or reorder your verse favorites. Save your own user-defined preferences.

  26. public adjuster Says:

Big deal…I’m not sure the niche market for this type of thing will be big enough, but who knows…I have no use for one.

  27. Conor Says:

Public adjuster: there is a huge market for this, and is has been anticipated for quite some time. I love my esv personal reference Bible, but I love the idea of a Bible in my pocket for witnessing, and anytime reading. I own 3 esv apps built by third parties on my iPod already and I use them all the time. I have been hoping for an “official” app released by crossway. There are Millions of iPod and iPhone users in the US alone. Esv is quickly becoming the Bible of choice among evangelicals due to it s Accuracy, literal translation.

  28. Cletus Sammons Says:

I’m genuinely excited about the ipad, with any luck there’ll devices that can be bought when ever unveiled next month

  29. Moira Heatley Says:

I’m extremely excited about the ipad, with luck , there will items available to buy when ever introduced next month

  30. Don Says:

This is great news for fans of the ESV and the iPhone. With the proliferation of Android-based phones coming on the market, it will be nice the ESV Bible app ported to that platform as well. The integration with Twitter (and soon Facebook) will make it quite easy to encourage others with God’s word.

  31. ACF Says:

That’s great for the At&t folks. Are you planning an Android version? That would be even better!

  32. Mike Rosowski Says:

App is looking great! I sure hope one for WebOS is in the works, that would be awesome.

  33. Cornelius Says:

    Show the Android some love…

  34. Jeff Says:

Looks great - love the design and seamless transition from one book to another.

Some things to consider for update
    - a back button when you click on cross-references
    - a search function that isn’t limited to looking for words but also for bible verses. EX. Looking up Galatians 3:1 will take me to all the instances the word “Galatians” were uttered. I want to go straight to Galatians 3:1 please!

All in all, a great (and FREE) app!

  35. free ipads Says:

Is anyone using the Apple wireless keyboard with their iPad? If so, have you come across any complications?

  36. bkrueger Says:

    Jeff-
    Thanks for your great suggestions!

  38. d heinen Says:

  39. bkrueger Says:

D Heinen: Good things come to those who wait! The ESV app for the Droid and other smartphones will be coming soon. Thanks for reading and check back soon.

  40. Anthony W Says:

Can you give any indication of when the Android version will be released? (even if it’s x-weeks, or y-months) something we can look forward to!

  41. bkrueger Says:

Anthony: Yes– End of Summer 2010.

Great to hear!! I used to have and iphone and the ESV was the app i used DAILY!… But I sold it to get an android and am glad it is coming to android!! :) Any way we could sign up for an email when it is available??

  43. bkrueger Says:

MarleyNYC: We love your enthusiasm and are excited about the Android app feedback we’re already receiving. We will be posting any new developments here and on the Crossway blog. Please check that one also at crossway.org/blog.

  44. Jeff Says:

Do you have plans for Windows Phone 7 once it’s out?

  45. bkrueger Says:

Jeff: the windows 7 platform is on the horizon for us! We are starting to put together plans for that release now. Thanks!

  46. Allan Stanford Says:

Android!!! Is the end of the summer still looking promising? Can’t wait!

  47. bkrueger Says:

We can’t promise a specific timeline, but we’re actively developing apps for several mobile devices.

  48. Allan Stanford Says:

You guys are awesome. It has to be really exciting to know that you development efforts are contributing to the expansion of the Word in unprecedented ways. Aside from the portability of an iPhone App vs. a paper Bible, the esvonline and iPhone app make it so much easier to explore and learn from scripture.

My faith has been enriched by the esvonline resource and I’ve been studying the Word for years. I know it seems crazy to compare, but I honestly don’t think there has been a breakthrough of this magnitude in the accessibility of God’s Word since Gutenberg!

While we are all anxiously awaiting compatibility releases and apps for various devices, I just want to say thanks to the guys plugging away at the code. The work you’re doing has enormous and eternal significance.

  49. ben Says:

very excited for android as well, had an iphone, switched, miss the esv app being always present.

ALSO!!! the ONE feature i missed on the iphone app which should be added to each iphone, and future android was the 4 part reading plan found in the esv study bible, which is avalible online here…..
    http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/devotions/esv.study.bible/

i have added it to my mobile calendar

if that was part of the app i would pay for it. ??paid addon??!! thank you all for your hard work.

  50. Allan Stanford Says:

Is there any way that we could start an email list for mobile apps news updates? Or maybe even beta participation? (you know how us Android users love betas)
