Journaling Bible Coming Fall 2006
Crossway has announced one of the new ESV editions that is coming out this fall: the ESV Journaling Bible. Here’s their description:
The Journaling Bible is a unique format with wide margins and ruled lines designed for writing prayers, observations, sermon notes, and personal reflections. It also includes a one-year Bible reading plan. This Bible is offered in a Journaling-style cover and a Calfskin cover.
- Size: 6.25″ x 7.25″
- 7.5-point type
- Words of Christ in black
- Ribbon marker
- Wide margin with nearly 2 inches of ruled writing space
Here’s a sample of the interior. (It’s just a mockup, so there are a few oddities, but you get the idea.)
It comes in two bindings: a black “original” cover ($29.99) and a black calfskin cover ($69.99). The Original cover has an elastic strap to give the Bible a more journal-like look.

New ESV Journaling Bible Coming in August
Crossway is releasing a new edition of the ESV that I am very excited about. I don’t know how you feel about marginalia (a debate for another time, perhaps), but I’m going to stock it in Sky Cow regardless. From the publisher:

Very forward-thinking book design on the part of the Standard Bible Society. Bibles used to be beautifully constructed books that were admired, but rarely touched. That’s beginning to change as people want to—literally—interweave the story of their lives with the Scripture…

[…] but then Crossway had to announce the ESV Journaling Bible. What a great idea. I’ve been doing my bible reading on my PDA/phone, and while it’s great to have it available all the time, giving up the physical book just loses something. Did people say the same thing about books 1800 years ago? “Sure, the book is more practical and easy to store, but it’s just not the same as reading from a scroll…” […]

Crossway has received a preliminary shipment of the ESV Journaling Bible we mentioned in April. Only a couple hundred remain from this initial shipment at the time of this writing. More are coming in August.

We’ve talked about the new ESV Journaling Bible, Daily Reading Bible, and God’s Story editions coming out later this year. But Crossway has a few more editions that introduce new covers on existing editions.

The hard thing about blogging as opposed to journaling is that I feel obliged to put only fully realized thoughts in blog posts. In a journal, I can write down far less coherent notes without worrying about who might read them.
