We’ve released ten new spots in the “Bible for Life” radio campaign. Each one-minute spot has someone reading a passage from the ESV and meditating on it.

The Origin of the ESV

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

Ben Witherington recounts a secondhand tale of how the ESV came into being. We wanted briefly to share our version of events.
The real origin of the ESV Bible goes back to the early 1990s, long before the gender-language controversy, when Crossway’s president, Dr. Lane T. Dennis, talked to a number of Christian scholars and pastors [...]

One Week Left for MP3 Download Introductory Prices

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

Introductory prices for the MP3 downloads of Max McLean’s recording of the ESV expire February 28, 2006. That means that you’ll pay $49.95 instead of $39.95 for the complete Bible starting March 1, 2006. (We have to say that $49.95 for the complete Bible—over seventy hours—is still quite reasonable.)
Podcast subscription prices will remain the same.

We just added a new endorsement of the ESV to the Endorsements page:

“I absolutely love the ESV Bible. And since I began preaching from the ESV every week, our people love it too. As I see it, the ESV has it all—accuracy, literary flow, beauty, dignity. It’s wonderful for reading, preaching, studying, and memorizing. More [...]

Hand-Copying Greek

Tuesday, February 14th, 2006

Eli Evans blogs about hand-copying a Greek version of 2 Timothy. (Also see Part A and Part C.) Others have also blogged about the same project.
Hand-copying, of course, was how the manuscripts that make up the Bible made it through the centuries until the invention of the printing press. Modern people relearning ancient processes makes [...]

How Medium Affects Message

Friday, February 10th, 2006

Cafedave ponders how the medium in which he reads the Bible affects his response to the biblical text:
I’ve noticed, though, that depending on what method I’m using to get the Bible content

feed-reader program—mostly used for scanning large numbers of short articles
browser—speed reading longer articles
web print-out—usually used for articles that are interesting, but don’t need to [...]

“Quiet Times for Kids”

Wednesday, February 8th, 2006

Girl Talk shares some approaches for having devotional times with children who can’t read yet.
They cover Scripture memory (children often have astonishing memories), Scripture reading (in their case, going through stories in the Old Testament), and other resources that might help you.
Sharing Scripture with your kids is one of the most important things you can [...]

Psalm 100:3

Monday, February 6th, 2006

Claude Mariottini, who isn’t affiliated with the ESV, delves into the textual background of Psalm 100:3.
The King James Version translates it:
Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
The ESV translates it:
Know that the LORD, [...]

ESV.org Redesigned

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

We’ve given a visual facelift to the ESV.org website in honor of its one-year anniversary. We’ve used images from Crossway’s new ESV catalog, so you’ll see pictures of ESV Bibles instead of smiling people as you browse the site. (You might need to refresh the page if you’ve visited recently.)
Here are some screenshots to illustrate [...]
