Outreach Edition Font

The new ESV Outreach Edition has 928 pages, while the ESV Classic Thinline setting has 1106 pages. Why the difference?

Crossway wanted to sell the Outreach Edition inexpensively, which meant reducing the page count without sacrificing readability. They used a variety of techniques to cut the number of pages, most prominently by changing the font used, from Berkeley to Veritas.

The Veritas font was designed for Bibles and other large projects that need to fit a lot of text into a limited amount of space. It’s readable at smaller sizes than some other fonts.

Want to learn more about Bible typefaces? We recommend the article From Genesis to Revelations (sic) about the development of a font derived from Veritas. It reveals how much thought goes into creating a font for Bibles and provides a fascinating overview of the balances that publishers must strike when typesetting large works.
